Benda, daughter of Frank C. and Elizabeth (Ployhart) Benda was born February 5, 1913 in Academy, SD. She graduated from high school in Platte, SD in 1929, and went on to attend Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell, SD, receiving her teaching certificate in 1931. Ruby taught school in Eagle Center, SD. In 1940, Ruby was united in marriage with Laurence B. Elpert in Dolton, SD. Ruby was employed as a Post Master. Laurence was killed in World War II. In 1946, Ruby was united in marriage with Bernard S. Johnson in Dolton. The couple moved to Sioux Falls for a year, and then bought a farm near Brandon. Ruby worked for some time at Raven Industries and Ed Yost sewing hot air balloons. Bernard died in 1980. Ruby was formerly a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, and currently a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon. She was also a member of the Risen Savior Altar Society and the Merry Matrons Extension Club. Ruby was an avid gardener, cook, and seamstress. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Mary DeVaney, Sioux Falls; her son, Maurice (Barb) Johnson, Chicago, IL; five grandchildren, Douglas DeVaney, Charles (Erin) DeVaney, and Dionne DeVaney, all of Sioux Falls, Colin (Christie) Johnson and Brian Johnson, all of Washington, DC; and one great-granddaughter, Madelyn DeVaney, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Bea (Harold) Carter, Helen (Harold) Shoonover, Inez (Floyd) Gist; one brother, Ray Benda; her first husband, Laurence; and her second husband, Bernard. The family has requested that memorials be directed to Risen Savior Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society.
