Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Jasper County Historical Society. Ruby, the daughter of Melvin and Minthia (Burggraaff) Cooper, was born on April 26, 1921, on a farm in Lynnville. She grew up in Newton and was the Valedictorian of the Newton High School Class of 1939. A lifelong learner, Ruby attended the Chillicothe Business School and several adult education classes at DMACC where she became rather computer savvy. Ruby worked in accounting for the DNP Lumber Company and Maytag Loan and Abstract. On August 6, 1946, Ruby married Jason R. Blount in Newton, Iowa. Together, Ruby and Jason visited all 50 states, every Canadian province, and every continent except Antarctica. They enjoyed the Elderhostel program to learn during their travels but also loved relaxing at Lake Okoboji. When she wasn't traveling, Ruby was an active member of several church groups through the United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Kweens. Ruby is survived by her son, Tim (Wanda) Blount of Newton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jason Blount, and four sisters, Thelma Brown, Dorothy Pickett, Irma Pickett, and Carmen Peak. Source: Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa
