Ruby Irene Messenger, 103, of Pittsburg, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Medicalodge of Frontenac.
She was born October 10, 1910 at Pittsburg, the daughter of Lewis Dwight and Maybelle (Scranton) Messenger.
Ms. Messenger graduated from Pasadena College with a Bachelor's degree in Education. She taught in the California School District for 20 years before retiring.
Ms. Messenger then became a missionary for 5 years in Guatemala.
Membership was held in the First Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburg.

Ruby Irene Messenger, 103, of Pittsburg, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Medicalodge of Frontenac.
She was born October 10, 1910 at Pittsburg, the daughter of Lewis Dwight and Maybelle (Scranton) Messenger.
Ms. Messenger graduated from Pasadena College with a Bachelor's degree in Education. She taught in the California School District for 20 years before retiring.
Ms. Messenger then became a missionary for 5 years in Guatemala.
Membership was held in the First Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburg.
Survivors include a second cousin, J.D. Messenger of Pittsburg; and several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and 2 sisters.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. (Jan. 6) at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Jim Sukraw officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the First Church of the Nazarene. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com.

At the age of 66, Ruby Messenger served as a missionary in Guatemala. Living and traveling alone, she shared her faith for two years, from 1976 to 1978, before returning home to live with and care for her sister Hazel, after Hazel suffered a stroke. Ruby's book, "Faith and the Edge of Danger" (Lester, Allen & Sherrill, Inc., 1992), is a captivating and suspenseful account of her experience in the missionary field.
