Description	:	Ruby Jermstad Mershon was born April 1, 1904 in Brookings, South Dakota, the daughter of Ole O. and Clara (Johnson) Jermstad. She was the only grandchild of Ole O. and Randi (Ust) Jermstad, Sr., the first permanent white settlers to what is now Brookings County. Read More	Ruby Jermstad Mershon was born April 1, 1904 in Brookings, South Dakota, the daughter of Ole O. and Clara (Johnson) Jermstad. She was the only grandchild of Ole O. and Randi (Ust) Jermstad, Sr., the first permanent white settlers to what is now Brookings County. She died on Friday, June 20, 2003 at the United Retirement Center at the age of 99 years. Ruby attended city schools, graduating from Brookings High School with the class of 1922. After graduation from South Dakota State College, she taught English and History in White High School until her marriage to Paul Jay Mershon on June 18, 1930. They resided in Watertown and Aberdeen during the time Paul worked for the State of South Dakota. They moved to a farm in the Lake Campbell area and in 1948 moved to the Jermstad family homestead just west of Brookings. After Pauls death in 1975, Ruby moved into Brookings. She entered the United Retirement Center on February 19, 2002. She was a charter member and Director Emeritus of the Brookings County Historical Society and a charter member of the Brookings Area Genealogical Society, both very dear to her heart. She was a life long member of the First Lutheran Church having been baptized in the original wood church, confirmed in the brick church, both located at 7th Street and Main Ave., as well as the present church. She was active in church activities and Ladies Aid. Other memberships included the Brookings Riding Club, Fortnightly, Brookings Extension Clubs (Petal Pals) and World War I Auxiliary, where she served as president for many years. She was also the Brookings County Cancer chairman for five years. Ruby is survived by two daughters, Jane Daly and her husband Richard of Lompoc, CA and Karen Welch and her husband Barry of Willmar, MN; four grandchildren, Kerry Daly of Las Vegas, NV, Steve Daly and his wife Denise and Paula Daly, all of Lompoc, and Kari Findorff and her husband Michael of Woodbury, MN; and two great grandchildren, Jessica Daly and Riley Findorff. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents and one granddaughter, Shannon Welch.
