Ruby Mary Pieper was born on October 7, 1917 to LeRoy and Anna (Mueller) Billings in Hawkeye, IA. She graduated from the West Union School in 1934 with a teaching certificate. In 1959 she graduated from Upper Iowa University with a BA degree. She then attended University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and had many hours toward her Master’s Degree. Read More	Ruby Pieper, age 94, of West Union, IA, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, IA. Ruby Mary Pieper was born on October 7, 1917 to LeRoy and Anna (Mueller) Billings in Hawkeye, IA. She graduated from the West Union School in 1934 with a teaching certificate. In 1959 she graduated from Upper Iowa University with a BA degree. She then attended University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and had many hours toward her Master’s Degree. Ruby was a teacher for 51 ½ years before retiring in 1989. She taught in rural schools for 12 ½ years and in the West Central Schools for 39 years. Her love was working with children. In 1940 she married Russell Pieper and were the parents of one son, Bruce. She worked as a volunteer at the Palmer Memorial Hospital, delivered meals to the Senior Citizens for over 13 years. She was past president of the Business and Professional Women and of Rural Teachers Organization. She enjoyed her golfing and her bridge clubs. Her special interests were working with antique furniture, gardening, reading, baking and playing bridge. She is survived by her son, Bruce and wife Judy of Virginia Beach, VA; two granddaughters, Justyn (Grover) Baxley of Virginia Beach, VA and Jordan (Jeremy) Rash of Napa, CA; two great-grandchildren, Nielson Baxley and Maren Baxley of Virginia Beach, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Russell, in 1997, two brothers, Harley Schatz and George J. Schatz; two sisters, Lida and Berneice (Schatz) Metcalf. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the West Union Recreation Center. Please address to: West Union Recreation Foundation P.O. Box 233 West Union, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, West Union, IA, with Rev Scott Keele Kober as officiant. Interment will follow at the West Union Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Friday, February 3, 2012 at the Burnham – Wood Funeral Home in West Union, IA.
