In the Harbart family, oldest son Ludwig emigrated to Germany in the 1920's, leaving that responsibility to Rudolf. On November 25, 1930 Rudolf married Emma Biese in Ossowka, Poland. According to their marriage record, they signed a marriage contract - likely indicating their promise to take care of Rudolf's parents in return for inheriting their farm and property. Besides his parents, Rudolf also took care of his older half-sister Olga Bensel, who was developmentally disabled (possibly a deaf-mute), after being struck by lightning as a child. Rudolf & Emma, along with his parents and half-sister, lived on a farm in the village of Teodorowo (near Lipno), Poland. They had 5 children, all of whom survived into adulthood: Artur - 1931 Erich - 1933 Irma - 1935 Erika - 1942 Irene Because Poland had been invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany in 1939, the region the Harbarts were living in was annexed by Germany and renamed "West Prussia" (the town of Teodorowo was renamed "Dietershof"). As an integral part of Germany, all healthy men of German descent living there were conscripted into the German army. However, this did not apply to Rudolf; besides working the family farm, Rudolf also served as Chief of the Fire Department for the village. In this critical position, Rudolf was exempt from conscription into the army. This fact served the family well, because in January of 1945, the Harbarts were forced to flee their home ahead of the advancing Soviet Army. In his position of responsibility, Rudolf helped organize (albeit hastily) the evacuation of the village. After a journey lasting several months, and enduring the harsh winter weather, the Harbarts arrived in western Germany - right in the middle of the advancing American, British and Canadian forces. As non-combatants, the Harbarts survived this tense period, and the post-war years. On April 13, 1950, through the Lutheran Resettlement Service, the Harbart family was able to emigrate to the United States, in exchange for a year of "service". They settled in Nebraska and rebuilt their lives there - doing farming and other odd jobs that presented themselves. After arriving in the US, Rudolf's older half-brother Adolf Bensel - whom Rudolf had not seen in 40 years - came for a visit from Detroit with his wife Emma. Oldest son Artur Harbart accompanied them back to Detroit for a few years - working in the auto industry there, before returning to Nebraska. Rudolf died 11 years later, on November 02, 1961 in Norfolk, Nebraska. His widow Emma remarried a couple of years later to the widower Henry Busch, but he also died on February 18, 1966. Emma lived to the age of 99; she died on July 13, 2009 in Battle Creek, Nebraska. Rudolf and Emma are buried together in New Lutheran Cemetery in Norfolk.
