Description	:	The following obituary appeared in the newspaper at Le Mars, Iowa, Feb 1928: "Death claimed Rudolf Smid, a resident of Plymouth county for more than forty[]-five years, at his home, 127 Second Avenue, NE., Monday night, at the age of 86 years. Mr. Smid had been in failing health since last fall, and death was due to the infirmities of age. Mr. Smid was born at Den Hoor[n], Holland, Europe, February 2, 1842, where he grew to manhood and was married to Regina Halsema May 27, 1864. They came to the United States... Mr. Smid had been in failing health since last fall, and death was due to the infirmities of age. Mr. Smid was born at Den Hoor[n], Holland, Europe, February 2, 1842, where he grew to manhood and was married to Regina Halsema May 27, 1864. They came to the United States in the early eighties and made their home shortly after their arrival in Plymouth county, and engaged in farming, occupying various farms until they moved to Le Mars to live. Mrs. Smid died October 6, 1909. Mr. Smid is survived by four sons and four daughters, who are: Herman Smid, of Edgewater, Minn.; Frank Smid, of Elgin township; Louis Smid, of America township, and John Smid, publisher of the Breda News, in Carroll county; Mrs. Herman Kolker of America township; Mrs. Robert Ackerman, of Slayton, Minn.; Mrs. Bert Groves and Mrs. Louis Van Asma, of Le Mars. There are thirty-eight grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Joseph's church, Mgr. W. A. Pape officiating, and the interment made in the St. Joseph cemetery. Mr. Smid was an industrious and hardworking citizen, a good husband and father, and enjoyed the esteem of many friends in a large circle of acquaintance." Genealogy records from The Netherlands reveal some corrections to this obituary. Roelof Harmannus Smit (his Dutch name) was born in Mensingeweer, Leens, Groningen, Netherlands on 2 Feb 1842. He was the son of Harmannus Roelfs Smit (1817-1855) and Maria Freerks Muller (1817-1858). Roelof married Regina Halsema on 27 May 1864 in Kloosterburen, Groningen, Netherlands. The birth records of their children show that all of their children prior to immigration to the US in 1882 were born in Maarhuizen, Winsum, Groningen, Netherlands.
