Mr. Sommermeyer was born in Demerthin, Brandenburg, Germany, March 29, 1841, and all his earlier life was spent in his native country. Read More	Feb 18, 1915 - Carroll Times - Rudolph Sommermeyer, a resident of Carroll for forty-three years, died early Monday morning at St Anthony's Hospital, where he had been operated on the day previous. Mr. Sommermeyer was born in Demerthin, Brandenburg, Germany, March 29, 1841, and all his earlier life was spent in his native country. He served in the Prussian army both in the war with Denmark which resulted in the cession of the provinces of Schleswlg and Holstein to Prussia and also in the war with Austria. After his military service was ended in 1868, he married Miss Marie Fetz and they came at once to the United States. There is an interesting romance connected with this marriage. The bride was a member of an aristocratic German family while the groom was a tailor by trade and the high-born kinsmen of the bride were opposed to the union. Love found ways to elude the obstacles which this difference in rank interposed and the happy couple came to America where the spirit of equality was more in keeping with their own ideas. Their first home was in Chicago, where they lived for three years, only leaving that city after the great Chicago fire of 1871. They then came to Carroll where they have resided ever since. In this city, Mr. Sommermeyer again engaged in his trade as a tailor which he pursued for years but which he finally had to give up because of the loss of a finger by blood poisoning. He then engaged in gardening, which has been his occupation ever since. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sommermeyer, of whom five are living. They are Mrs. William Sutherland, of Pontiac, Minnesota; Henry Sommermeyer, of Illinois; Henry Sommermeyer, of Elmore, Minnesota; Mrs. John Hendrickson, Mrs. Wesley Hudgins, and Rudolph Sommermeyer, of Carroll. There are twenty living grandchildren. The deaceased had two brothers both of whom preceded him in death. One of them was drowned and the other died three years ago in Berlin, where he was a cashier in the National Bank. The last illness of Mr. Sommermeyer was a complication of the mumps and quinsey. The serious character of the illness was not fully recognized until the latter part of last week. He was taken to the hospital on Saturday and was operated on Sunday morning but never rallied from it and death came at 4:30 Monday morning. The funeral was held this morning at 10 o'clock at the Lutheran church of which the deceased was a member, the service being conducted by Rev. L. Eschbach of Glldden.
