Kessler, 92, of Billings passed away on May 13, 2014, after a long age-related illness. Rueben was born to Fred and Emma Kessler in Anamoose, N.D., on June 26, 1921, the oldest son and third child of 10 children. He worked on the family farm until 1942, when he was drafted into the army to serve in World War II, where he was on active duty in the Army Medical Corps in southern England. It was there in 1944 while bicycling during a day of leave, that he passed a pretty red-headed English girl waiting at the bus stop. He and Tessa Melbourne fell in love and quickly became engaged. When Rueben was discharged in 1945, Tessa embarked on the long steamship voyage and train ride from her incredibly green native Hampshire to the plains of North Dakota, where they were married in 1947. They set up house in Minot, N.D., where Rueben worked first as a dental technician and at a variety other job's. In 1957, they moved to Billings, where he worked at various positions before retiring from Sweetheart Bakery in 1986. All their lives, Rueben and Tess enjoyed traveling and camping in Montana's forests and mountains. Nearly every summer weekend would find them camped in some campground in the nearby Beartooth Mountains. Once he retired, Rueben and Tess were able to pursue their love of travel and camping by pulling their trailer throughout the country. They became dedicated snowbirds spending 17 winters in Arizona, Texas and California, where they made a whole new set of friends among that unique group of folks from the northern climes who migrate south every winter. In the spring they would return home, where Rueben would become immersed in working in his yard and tinkering in his work shed on a seemingly endless round of projects, some of which made a lot of sense and some of which remained a total mystery to his family. He is survived by his wife, Tessa; sons Jerry (Janice) of Billings, Tom of Billings, Philip of Laurel; and daughter Sheila of Billings. Rueben also has five grandchildren, Lindsey Ross (Dan) of Spokane, Jeremy and Caleb Kessler of Bozeman, Matt Kessler of Denver and Brandi Christenson (Jeremy) of Las Vegas. He has two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, May 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Billings. Burial will be at the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery in Laurel, MT. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Billings or to the charity of choice. Smith's Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
