Read More	Married Maxine Mattheis on Feb 24, 1948∼Services were held on Saturday at First English Lutheran Church for Rueben Mattheis, who died on Dec. 13, 2015 at the age of 100. Rueben was born on August 13, 1915, in Parkston, SD. He lived and worked on the family farm there until he moved to Lennox in 1947. He married Maxine Larson on Feb. 24, 1948. They spent almost every day together for the rest of his long life, most of it in Lennox. After a stroke in 2010, he moved with Maxine to Omaha. Although his birthday was in August, he celebrated this hundredth year of life with friends and family throughout 2015, passing away on Sunday, December 13th. He was preceded in death by his mother Theresa Kern Mattheis, father Henry, his brothers Richard, Albert, Rudy, Ernest, and sister Frieda. He is survived by wife Maxine, and 6 children (and spouses): Wade (Marilyn), Phil (Molly), Susan (Sheldon) Davis, Jim (Darcee), David (Karen), and Teresa (Craig) Faessler. There are 10 grandchildren, one step-grandchild, and 2 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way). With his older brother Richard, Rueben ran Mattheis Supply in Lennox. The dealership sold Plymouth and DeSoto cars, and a variety of farm implement brands including Allis Chalmers, Gehl, New Holland, and others. After the brothers sold the business in 1970, he stayed on as parts and repair manager until 1983. He maintained the buildings and grounds of Sunrise Manor in Lennox until ﬁnally retiring from paid employment in 1988. Rueben was an active community leader, serving on the Lennox city council for 17 years. He took his role as supervisor of the city library very seriously, by helping to select new titles, and by personally reading almost every book on the shelves. He was an active and faithful member of the First English Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He also taught Sunday School, and particularly enjoyed singing in the church choir for many years. After retiring from the choir, he led the tenor section from the pews until moving to Omaha. He enjoyed gardening, wood working, ﬁshing and bird-watching, was a master handyman, and had an endless interest in almost everything. He read thousands of books in his lifetime, and much more in the newspapers and magazines. He lived a very private life at home, with a small circle of friends and family. Their children left South Dakota to scatter across the US, but he and Maxine enjoyed traveling to visit them all. They found special joy in the reunions at their home in Lennox, especially on the rare occasions when all were able to be present. In the last months as his health and awareness faded rapidly. he found great comfort revisiting old favorite books and authors. He passed away among loving family, cared for tenderly by the staff of a wonderful hospice setting.
