AUSTIN DEAD Native of This County, and a Well-Known Political Figure in Stanly County, Stricken With Congestion of the Brain. Stricken with congestion of the brain, Hon. Rufus E. Austin, a native of this county, died at three o'clock Thursday morning at his home in Albemarle. At one time he represented Stanly county in the Legislature, and had been mayor of Albemarle for several terms. It is said that he carried a $40,000 insurance policy on his life. Mr. Austin was born and reared in Goose Creek township, and was a son of the late A. J. Austin. Many relatives in that section survive him. He was well-known and highly respected in this, his native county. The funeral will take place today and interment will be in the Albemarle cemetery. The sick man awoke shortly before one o'clock, and soon thereafter suffered a stroke of paralysis. His condition grew rapidly worse, death overtaking him after two hours of suffering. Mr. Austin was one of the leading men of Albemarle and four years ago was elected a member of the general assembly from Stanly county. He was a mayor of Albemarle about eight years ago, serving for four years. Mr. Austin was a member of the Masonic Order and the funeral will be with Masonic rites. He was also an elder in the Presbyterian church, in which faith he was reared, and was active in church and charitable work taking a great interest in the religious life of his town and community. He was held in high esteem in Stanly county, and was a man of exceptional worth and of integrity of a rare order, upright and always standing for the moral betterment of his town and section. The deceased is survived by a wife, who before her marriage was Miss Ross of Union county. Four children, the eldest 17 years of age and the youngest eleven years of age, also survive. Four brothers, Dr. J. A. Austin of Charlotte, and Messrs. D. W., A. D., and A. B. Austin, all of Union county, and two sisters, Mrs. I. R. Duncan and Mrs. John Biggers of Union, also survive.
