BEASON TOLL TAKER CORONORS JURY SAYS NO CRIMINAL INTENT, BEASON HELD ON OPEN CHARGE Last Monday morning at approximately 3:15 am Rufus "Whitey" Noland was shot and instantly killed on the Okanogan side approach to the bridge. The party of which Noland was a member was compose of himself, Don Hyde, Fred Martin, Miss Thelma Watson and Miss Henrietta Jump. The young people had been to a dance at Manson and upon returning had stared to take Mr. Martin to the Columbia Bar where he was working. Martin was driving the car and was going at a speed of 30 to 35 miles per hour when they passed the toll house. As there had been a number of cars cross the bridge without paying toll, Mr. Beason seized his rifle and ran out and shot once with the intent of causing the machine to halt, and pay the toll. The gun was fired without aim, the bullet striking the back end of the car passing thru the back seat and striking Noland on the right side of the spinal column and ranging downward passing through the heart. Death was instantaneous. From the position of the wound in the body, "Whitey" was looking out the back window when he was struck. Mr. Martin drove across the bridge and turned around and came back and immediately went to Dr. McKinley who pronounced "Whitey" dead. Report to Sheriff Beason testified at the inquest that he thought the men were joking when he said a man had been shot, but when convinced otherwise he told the men "For God's sake get him to a doctor as quick as they could". Beason immediately went to Brewster to inquire about the injured man and had Marshall Jolly telephone Fred H. Furey, a stockholder of the Okanogan-Douglas Inter-County Bridge Company, at Wenatchee. He then telephoned to Sheriff B. T. McCauley and reported the shooting. Furey left Wenatchee immediately and after making inquiries about the affair at Brewster immediately took Beason to Okanogan. Beason said he had the rifle at the toll house to protect his home a few hundred feet away. He frequently left a considerable sum of money at the house, he testified, and felt that in case of an attempted robbery at the house he would be in position to aid in the capture if he kept the rifle at the toll house. Chas. A. Johnson appeared at the inquest as counsel for Mr. Beason and participated in the examination of the witnesses. The jury found the car approached the bridge at a speed of 30 to 35 miles and hour and failed to slow down for the purpose of paying tolls. The bridge has a grade of about six per cent for about 600 feet from the toll house. Johnson inquired of the witnesses whether they had not planned before leaving Chelan to cross the bridge without paying. Rufus Noland was born here on the 21st of February 1902 and died Monday morning, September 24, 1928 at the age of 26 years. Burial services were held at the Congregational Church Wednesday morning at 10 am with a large number of friends and relatives in attendance. "Whitey" had a large number of warm personal friends who all expressed regret at his passing. He was generous to a fault and had no enemies. He was a friend to all. He leaves a father, Barney Noland of Wenatchee, a mother Mrs. Etna Vaughan, of Columbia Bar, a sister, Mrs. Jessie Sperry of Wenatchee and a brother Bud Noland besides a large number of minor relatives. Interment was had in the local cemetery, Rev. Cecil Adams of Pateros officiated. Rev. Adams paid many glowing tributes to the many sterling qualities of Rufus hidden beneath a rough exterior.
