Hensley and Lucinda Van Hensley, born and raised in the Mountaindale Community of Spivey Mountain, Unicoi Co., Tennessee. The birth year on her headstone is incorrect. According to the 1870 Washington Co., TN Census, Ruhama was noted age "3/12" living in household #144 with her parents, hence she was born March 1870. In the 1880 Unicoi Co., TN census, HH #42, Ruhama was noted age 10 and born in TN. Next door were Howell Edwards and Louisa Jane (nee Hensley) on one side and Silas Hensley and Sarah (nee Hensley) on the other on Spivey Mountain. Ruhamia was 13 years old when her mother died in 1883 and her father was left with several children to care for. Her father remarried to widow “Lina (Polina) Peterson-Ledford" on December 9, 1889, in Erwin, Unicoi Co., TN. Two weeks later Ruhamia married Samuel L. Bradford on December 27, 1889, at “Polina Hensley’s house in Ramseytown." Their marriage license was from Yancey Co., NC and witnesses were Stanford Ledford (Polina's son through first her marriage with John Ledford), Jason Whitson and John Peek. Sam acquired a parcel of land through his father's estate in Little Creek (Lewisburg, Ramsey Twp.) and he and Ruhama established their own farm and remained there throughout their lives raising 9 children. In the 1900 Yancey Co., NC Census, Ramseytown, HH #41, the following members were in the household with month / year declarations: Sam b. Jan 1868 and “Rheuhama” March 1871, “Osker" Dec. 1890, Princy Aug 1893, Sue Emma March 1896 and Rexter June 1898. Living next door were William Williams family on one side and widow Mary J. Woodby and children on the other. In the 1910 Ramseytown, Yancey Co., NC Census, HH #205, Sam was noted as a farmer and he and Ruhama were married for 20 years with the following children in the household: Oscar 19, Princy 17, Suemma 14, Rexter 12, Arthur 10, Lydia (Lyde) 5, Andy 3 and Isom 22 (Isom is Sam Bradford’s nephew). Next door lived Pittman Williams family on one side and Neiss Randolf (age 70) on the other. Ruhamia’s widowed father, Barnett L. Hensley, "age 78", was living nearby in HH #218 with his daughter (Ruhamia's sister) Martha Jane and her husband Jesse A.C. Martin. They both contracted tuberculosis and Martha Jane died in January 1914 and Jesse died in January 1915 after which time, Barnett (father) moved back over to Spivey to live at his son’s (Hiram C.) place. Barnett died a year later on November 19, 1916, with “no medical attention” per the record and Hiram was the informant. Ruhamia and Sam continued to live on their farm in Little Creek (Ramseytown) and were noted in the 1920 census and 1930 Ramseytown, Yancey Co., NC censuses. Sometime after 1920, Sam opened up a General Store on the corner of Bradford and Little Creek Road (store now gone) and sold a variety of goods, food, supplies and sundries. Sam died in 1932 from long term complications from a gunshot wound to the abdomen from an family altercation at his store (see his memorial) and left a Will bequeathing his store to his sons Arthur and Woodrow and the land upon which it sits. Ruhamia continued to live another 8 years and died in 1940 and gone before that census. I could not find her death certificate.
