Russell "Dale" was born March 26, 1924, in Sioux City, IA, the son of Russell Isacc and Mae Mele (Sherman) Polly. He graduated from Whiting High School in 1942. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served from January 14, 1943 until Honorably Discharged on February 28, 1946. Russell "Dale" was born March 26, 1924, in Sioux City, IA, the son of Russell Isacc and Mae Mele (Sherman) Polly. He graduated from Whiting High School in 1942. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served from January 14, 1943 until Honorably Discharged on February 28, 1946. He served in WWII where he trained on B-17's and also received the Good Conduct Medal for his dedicated service. Dale and Jeanne Tyson were united in marriage on September 1, 1945 at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Onawa, IA. Four sons were born to this union. He and Jeanne lived their entire married life in Whiting. Dale was employed by the United States Post Office first as a clerk and then as a rural mail carrier for 36 ½ years. Dale served on the Monona County Conservation Board with the outdoor club for 25 years, Whiting Fire Department, and Whiting American Legion Emery Johnson Post #481 for 67 years. His hobbies included model railroading, fishing, and loved to hunt in his earlier years. He also enjoyed building bird houses especially wren houses. Dale was of the Christian faith and was proud to be baptized. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Jeanne Polly of Whiting, IA; four sons, Jim (Meg) Polly of Whiting, IA, Denny (Joni) Polly of Nevada, TX, Doug Polly of Fort Dodge, IA, and Ed (his special lady friend) Polly of Whiting, IA; six grandchildren, Mike, Melanie, Missy, Chad, Heather, and Jesse; two great-grandchildren, Autumn and Rachel; and one great-great-grandchild, Aiden; two sisters, Faye Ray of Kingsley, IA and Bonnie (Bud) Ray of Sloan, IA, a brother-in-law, Jim (Nancy) Tyson of Onawa, IA; special cousins, Marietta (Ed) Weber of Council Bluffs, IA; and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Susan Polly; a granddaughter, Teresa Polly; a brother-in-law, Dick Ray; and two sisters-in-law, Marian Buchberger and Margaret Ann (Dale) Kreger.
