Went to Westville and lived with Idle family--too much for them to handle--then lived with family named Craig for over two years. Lived with Duncan family, Frank and sister. Lived in Ironton in 1919. In 1919 lived in Kingscreek with Frank Duncan. In 1920 went to Springfield. Met Zelma while living in Kingscreek. Met her ub 1919 in Urbana through cousin of Zelma's. All this time he worked for various people on their farms during the summer months. During the winter he went to Springfield and worked for Crowell Publishing Company. He had seen Zelma a year earlier when Armistice of War was signed. Russell was working in field west of Urbana and was playing a tune on the steam whistles of threasher machine with Zelma and a group went by to go to Urbana to celebrate Armistice. They waved at Dad and a year later when Russell and Zelma met, Zelma told him about the incident. Went together for a year, married 1920. Quit Crowell and went to work for various others. Living in Springfield when first married. Layed of, came back to country, lived near Grandma's, Champaign Co. and set up housekeeping. Did farm work, worked in elevator, any odd jobs he could find, 1917-1918. In Oct 1917 went to New York ad lived with Chelcy in Tonawanda, N.Y. Chelcy single at the time. Worked at Cadillac-Buick Co. in N.Y. In July 4, 1918 left and came back to Urbana to live with Frank Duncan at Kingscreek. Called in service July 1918, took first examination, was threshing at the time. They told him to finish threshing and then report back. When he reported back in Oct a time was set for him to be called on Nov. 18th but Armistice signed on Nov. 11. After living on farm Mom and Dad moved to Rosewood after Genevieve was born. Moved to Grandma's where Geraldine wan born, lived there 2 to 3 months. Moved to Marion, went to work for Osgood Steam Shovel then Marion Steam Shovel and then to Commercial May 16, 1930. Lived in Marion 13 years, Richard and Marge born there. Moved to Columbus 1935 transferred by Commercial Motor Freight. Lived in Linden first on Aberdeen Ave. Then moved to 2648 Deming Ave, 350 Olentangy Street and finally to 616 Clinton Hts. Worked for Commercial 33 years, 7 mos. Retired Dec. 31, 1963 at age of 65. Original in possession of David F. Springfield News December 4, 1981 Russell D. Young, 83, of Columbus, a former resident of St. Paris, died Thursday at 1 a.m. in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, where he had been a patient one week. He had been in failing health for several months. A retired mechanic for Commercial Motor Freight Co. in Columbus, he was born in Darke County on May 31, 1898, and was a member of the International Association of Machinists. His wife, Zelma Frank Young, died in 1978. A daughter is also dead. Survivors include a son, John R. Young of Huber Heights; two daughters, Mrs. Herb (Genevieve) Rumfield of Galloway, and Mrs. Mike (Geraldine) Norfolk of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, John Young of Springfield, and Chelsa of Buffalo, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Biggert of Springfield; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Friends may call at Richeson-Wickham and Atkins Funeral Home, St. Paris, on Saturday after 4 p.m. Services will be held there Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Dan Dennis of Clifton Avenue United Methodist Church in Springfield, with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, St. Paris. Contributed by Mike Welty
