Tribune September 5, 1995 page 6B Russell Howard Sorenson, 72 Jan. 28,1923 - Aug. 11, 1995 Ames - Russell Howard Sorenson, son of Clarence F. and Ethel G. (Gerratt) Sorenson, was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Harlan. He grew up in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School in 1941. After returning from serving his country in World War II, he married Helen Shirley Tippett Nov. 7, 1945, in Los Angeles, CA. The couple returned to Harlan where he worked as a businessman. During the Korean conflict, he again served his country as a member of the Air Force. In 1968, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He then continued his education at the University of Iowa, and was awarded a Master of Social Work Degree in 1971. In 1970, they moved to Ames where he was employed by Beloit of Ames, and later was in private practice as a psychotherapist. He worked with youth, and at the VA Hospital in Knoxville. After his retirement Dec. 16, 1982, the couple often spent part of the winter in Tucson, AZ.'He continued in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1983, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan. He died Aug. 11, 1995, at his Ames residence at age 72 years, 6 months and 24 days. Preceding him in death were his father; one son, James Craig Sorenson; and one brother, Richard Sorenson at age 2. Survivors include his wife, Helen Sorenson of Ames; his mother, Ethel G. Sorenson of Harlan; one daughter, Joanne C. Sorenson of Denver, CO; one son, Thomas K. Sorenson of Seattle, CA; one brother, Rex Sorenson of Sioux Rapids; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held Aug. 15, 1995 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan. The officiant was Rev. Bill Hickerson of Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Levasy, MO. Casket bearers were Rex Sorenson, Chip Sorenson, Virgil Carter, Darrell Fahrenkrog, Murray Hubbard, and Rex Gerratt. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery.
