He died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk. --- Russell Junior Miller was born Nov. 28, 1922, at Stanton to John (Jack) and Viola Hanff. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stanton in February of 1923. At the age of 2, upon the death of their birth parents, Russell and his twin brother, Robert Miller, were adopted by aunt and uncle Sadie and Chris Miller and moved to Pilger. Russell became a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Pilger, being confirmed in 1936. He attended Pilger Public Schools, graduating in 1941. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in September of 1944. He served in the Pacific theater, seeing action in Saipan, Shima and Okinawa. He was wounded in battle on May 25, 1945, at the island of Okinawa. He was discharged in November of 1945 and received a Purple Heart, battle stars, a Good Conduct Medal, Victory and Pacific Theater Ribbons and the Combat Infantry Badge. He married Elna May Wegner of Pilger on June 17, 1940, in Hartington. They were the parents of three children, Judith, Peggy and Reed. Elna passed away on Nov. 8, 2007. Russell and Robert operated Miller's Food Market in Pilger for more than 40 years. The grocery store was operated by his family on the corner site since 1896. As the great-grandson of Pilger's founder, John Peter Pilger, Russell served on the Pilger School Board for many years, including president, and during the consolidation of Wisner-Pilger Schools. He also served for many years on the Stanton County Planning Commission. Russell was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Stanton VFW Post 3602 and Pilger American Legion Post 69. Russell was also the local representative of Consumers Public Power, which later became Nebraska Public Power, for many years after his father's full- time employment with the district. He passed away Nov. 26, 2011, at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk, two days short of his 89th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and twin brother Robert. Survivors include daughter Judith and husband Gene Schroeder of Wakefield, daughter Peggy and husband Ken Sonder of Verdigre, son Reed Miller of Kearney, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
