In 1900, Russell, born Oct 1869, and Nellie, born Dec 1876, were residing in Granville Twp., Licking Co., OH, with their Sylvie Crooks, 3, born Nov 1896 in OH, and Roy Crooks, 2, born May 1898 in OH. Russell was a farmer. Russell and Nellie had been married 4 years. Nellie had borne 2 children, both living. They owned their home and had a mortgage. Russell and Nellie were divorced ca 1905. In 1920, Russell was renting a home on Cherry Valley Road, Granville Township. He was a stone works laborer. 1933, Feb 27: MAN'S FOOT IS TORN BY SHOT Sheriff Finds Victim Nor Host Can Tell Details of Shooting D.C. McGinnis, 56, Outville, is in the City hospital, sufering from a shutgun (sic) wound in his left foot, inflicted Sundaynight inthe home of Russell Crooks, 62, at Central City. Crooks s in the county jail pendint the outcome of the injuries. The wounded man was brought to the hospital in the McCament ambulance. The ambulance men found McGinnis sitting ont he porch of the Crooks home. Sheriff Ross Embrey said his investigation revealed that the shooting occurred during adrinking party and that both men were so intoxicted that they can't remember what really happened. The sheriff said he hopes to learn the details of the shooting after the two men have recovered enough to tell the story. The sheirff was informed by the attending physician this morning that a large hole, clear through the foot, was the result of the shot, that the bones in the foot are shattered and complictions may make amputation necessary. 1933, Mar 1: CROOKS FINED ON RUM COUNT Russell Crooks, 63, taken into custody by Sheriff Ross Embrey following the hooting of D.C. McGinnis, 50, at the Crooks home last Sunday night, was arraigned in municipal court this morning on a charge of illegal possession of liquor. He was found guilty and fined $100 and costs. Any charges againt Crooks because of the wounding of McGinnis will have to be filed by McGinnis, according to the statement issued at the sheriff's office this mornng. Meanwhile, the statement made a the City hospital, where McGinnis is under treatment for the wound in his foot, that he is improving and there is little liklihood that amputation, feared at first, will now be necessary. 1933, May 31: Asks For Damages Damages in the sum of $5,200 aare asked in a petition filed in common pleas court by Kreider & Kreider for David C. McGinniss against Russell Crooks for injuries suffed and costs of treatment as a result of being shot in the foot by Crooks. The petition alleges that on Feb. 26, 1933, Crooks assaulted McGinniss by shooting him in the foot with a shotgun. McGinniss was in the employ of the B&O railroad as a signal maintainer and not in the employ of the defendant. That he was to start work for the company in March or April at $160 per month. As a result of the shooting he is permanently disabled and unable to work. It cost him $200 for his medical care and he asks in addition $5,000 damages. Russell's father, Henry, died on 25 Mar 1933. In Aug 1933. In probating Henry's will, a judge ruled that the executor should sell the real estate, trusts, bonds and securities, and divide it equally between the three brothers, Edgar, Russell and Kenneth. Henry's widow, and second wife, Maud Drunella (Lanning) had refused to take the estate given to her by Henry's will. In the 1940 Census, Granville Twp., Licking Co., OH, Russell Crooks, 70, born OH, was on a pension. He owned his home valued at $390, and had lived in the same area in 1935. He was married, no wife listed, and had a 9th grade education. 1942, Jun 30: Russel O. Crooks died in Unon Twp., Licking Co., OH. His parents were Henry Crooks and Phoebe Brilhoft (sic) NOTE: Russell's second son ,Roy Clark Crooks, died in King County Hospital, Seattle, WA. His grave has not been found as of Oct 2021.
