Read More	The following provided by Find A Grave contributor (46946785): Russell P. “Rusty” Schmitt, 68, a Stanford area rancher 49 years and long active in 4-H and county and state agricultural and livestock associations, died Thursday night in a Great Falls hospital. He had been a patient 10 days. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Stanford Presbyterian Church with Rev. Arne Magnuson officiating. Burial will be in the Stanford Cemetery. Schmitt began his career in agriculture as a 4-H member and in 1926 was one of the first three delegates to represent Montana at the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. He was a 4-H club leader 12 years and in 1962 was named Montana’s outstanding 4-H alumnus. He also served on the Future Farmers of America advisory committee and twice was coach of Stanford FFA state champion grain judging team. Schmitt was president of the Judith Basin Stockgrowers Association seven years and a member of the Montana and National Woolgrowers Associations, and Montana Stockgrowers Association. He had helped promote wool pools and a Bangs Disease control program. An active worker in weed control programs, Schmitt was chairman of the Judith Basin County Weed District for a quarter of a century and three-term president of the Montana Weed Control Association. His lobbying efforts during the 1969 legislature were considered instrumental in passage of the law making weed districts mandatory on a countywide basis. An elder of the Stanford Presbyterian Church, Schmitt had served also as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. He was president of Central Montana Sunday School Association two years. He was a past president of Stanford Rod and Gun Club. For 44 years he served on his community’s election board. He was born in Mound Ridge, Kan., and came to Montana at the age of eight. He married DeFon Haker of Coffee Creek in 1937. She survives as do a son, Larry Schmitt, Stanford; daughters, Mrs. Lee Roy (Rosalie) Hall and Mrs. Randy (Gail) Bucko, both of Great Falls; a sister, Mrs. Louie (Dora) Spady, Dallas, Ore.; a brother, Bernie Schmitt, Stanford, and two grandchildren.
