Description	:	Ruth Alona Kassebaum was born on June 2, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo., to Rev. Roy and Alma (Herpolsheimer) Kassebaum. She was baptized by her father at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. At the age of five, the family moved to North Hollywood, Calif., where Ruth began her life long journey as a Downs Syndrome child - wanting her whole life to be "normal." Since there were no public school classes for special needs children, her mother Alma (Herpolsheimer) Kassebaum - a former graduate and teacher at Concordia became Ruth's teacher. She was baptized by her father at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. At the age of five, the family moved to North Hollywood, Calif., where Ruth began her life long journey as a Downs Syndrome child - wanting her whole life to be "normal." Since there were no public school classes for special needs children, her mother Alma (Herpolsheimer) Kassebaum - a former graduate and teacher at Concordia became Ruth's teacher. Alma taught Ruth all her basic skills, manners and she provided a loving educational environment. Ruth was employed at Sheltered Workshops, traveled to 40 states and Europe. She loved to participate in Special Olympic bowling, where she won over 110 trophies. Ruth was selected to be a member on three California Championship Special Olympic Teams at UCLA. She also enjoyed Husker Football. Ruth loved Jesus and often sang her favorite songs - "Jesus Loves Me" and "I am Jesus' Little Lamb." God blessed her as she lived to be 70 years, 4 months and 20 days. She passed away peacefully at home in Westlake Village, Calif., on Oct. 22, 2013. She brought love and joy to all who knew her. Ruth is survived by her sister, Phoebe Kassebaum, Westlake Village, Calif.; nieces and nephews, Deborah Gotlieb, Apple Valley, Calif., Sherrie Buike, Aurora, Colo., Roy Kassebaum, West Hills, Calif., Judy Schmidt, Phoeniz, AZ, Linda Witham, Ventura, Calif., Mark Marquardt, Baltimore, Md., Paul Marquardt, Orange, Calif.; aunts, Betty Herpolsheimer, Seward, Lois Herpolsheimer, Lincoln; and brother-in-law, Rev. Elvin Marquardt. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Roy and Alma (Herpolsheimer) Kassebaum; brother, Roy Kassebaum; sister, Priscilla Marquardt; and uncle, Arthur Herpolsheimer. Services were Oct. 30, 2013, at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward with the Rev. Carolyn Crawford officiating. Interment was at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials in care of the Kassebaum family.
