Read More	Ruth Ann Ashing, 69, of Gilman, died on June 7, 2008, at her home. A memorial service was held at Gilman Community-United Church of Christ. Interment in Prairie View Cemetery near Gilman. Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell handled arrangements. Ruth was born on January 22, 1939, in Gilman, Iowa, the daughter of Brook and Thelma (McDonnell) Lavender. She was raised in Gilman and graduated from Gilman High School, Class of 1958. She was a member of the Gilman High School state basketball tournament team in 1955. She was married to Roger Kingery. They were the parents Mark, Scott, and Jean. On September 16, 1968, she married Bill Ashing in Omaha, Nebraska. They were the parents of one daughter, Leslie. The couple lived in Gilman and they operated the Ashing Cafe in the early 1980s. She also operated a food catering service and served as the custodian of Gilman Community Church. She was a member of Gilman Community-United Church of Christ and served as a church trustee and a member of the Ladies Guild. She was past president of the Gilman Lions Club and a member of Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary, Gilman Firettes, Gilman American Legion Auxiliary, and Poweshiek County Bowling Association. Ruth enjoyed touring the country on a Harley-Davidson, dancing, listening to country western bands, crafts, cooking for friends and family, watching kid's sporting events, fire conventions, choir and musical theatre events. She was a 35-year member of the Grinnell Bowling League and celebrated a 289 game. Survivors include her husband, Bill Ashing of Gilman; two sons, Mark (Toni Hudson) Kingery of Gilman and Scott Kingery of Montezuma; two daughters, Jean (Roger) Snyder of Sidney and Leslie (Tom Groves) Ashing of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gordon Lavender of Marshalltown and Larry "Butch" Lavender of Mexico; and three sisters, Donna Harris of Marshalltown, Bonnie Haradon of Princeton, Texas and Mary Ahlberg of Marshalltown.
