She was born on June 9, 1916 in Lucky Strike, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of the late Harry and Maime (McCullagh) Hillis. Ruth married Gene Lyle Hoffman on August 29, 1939 at Rock Port, MO. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1998. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David Lynn and Karen Hoffman of Westminster, CO, and Robert (Buzz) and Sandra Hoffman of West Des Moines, IA; two sisters-in-law, Judy Hoffman of Alton, IL, and Betty Hillis of New Port, VA; two sisters, Dorothy Green of Malibu, CA, and Joan Cooper and her spouse, Ray of Los Angeles, CA; sister-in-law Betty Hillis of New Port, VA, eight grand children, and eight great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Lars Hoffman (Judy Hoffman's husband); a sister, Jean Atwood, and two brothers, Robert Hillis and Jerry Hillis. Memorials may be made to the Hoffman Gardens, the Village of Godfrey, 6810 Godfrey Road, Godfrey, IL 62035. Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton are in charge of arrangements. OBITUARY #2 - at funeral service Ruth Hillis Hoffman was born on June 9, 1916 and grew up in Clinton Iowa with five brothers and sisters. She graduated from Iowa State with a degree in home economics where she met and married her husband, Gene Lyle Hoffman. They lived in Centerville Iowa while Gene was with the Farmers Home Administration and then on a farm in Bloomfield Iowa where they raised three boys. After leaving the farm they lived in West Des Moines, Iowa, Washington, D.C. , Mesa, Arizona, and Alton, Illinois. She is survived by her sons Robert "Buzz" Hoffman and David "Lynn" Hoffman, their wives Sandra and Karen respectively, daughter in-law, Judy Hoffman (Lars Hoffman's widow who preceded his mother Ruth in death) and eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. NOTES: Ruth's birth certificate shows that she was born in Kippenville in Alberta province in Canada and the certificate was registered at Lucky Strike. Kippenville is an unincorporated town and the closest county clerk is in Lucky Strike. Ruth's birth certificate lists her mother's first name as Mamie, whereas the obituary spells it as Maime.
