She was 100 years, 1 month and 3 days, of age. She passed under the compassionate care of the Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center staff in West Branch, Iowa. Hospice of Iowa City staff and volunteers, also, assisted Ruth in continuing the same spirit and goals with which she lived her whole life. Ruth remained lucid and participated in care decisions until the last days. She was one of 4 children... Ruth remained lucid and participated in care decisions until the last days. She was one of 4 children born to Harry and Mabel (Quigley) Stout. Ruth was orphaned at age 3 and lived in the Iowa Soldiers' Orphans' Home in Davenport, IA for 4 years. She was raised along with 2 brothers, Norman and Harry Stout, by Fred and Edna Conmey of Wyoming, Iowa and assumed the Conmey name. The Conmey's passed away in 1938. Ruth attended Wyoming High School and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1931. She took one year's training in well newborn baby care at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and worked in private homes caring for newborns until 1943. She moved to New York City and joined the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corp which provided training for Registered Nurses at Bellevue Hospital. After graduation from Bellevue in 1946, Ruth married Kenneth Bruce Lilley, U.S.N. in Harrisville, MI. After Kenneth's death in 1952, she was employed as a housemother and nurse at the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, MI for 22 years and as a nurse at Eaton Rapids Medical Center for 6 years. Upon retirement, she worked as a volunteer in Lansing schools as a teacher's assistant. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and bowling and was a square dancer. Growing day lilies made her yard beautiful. She always babysat when needed. Hers was a life of selfless service to others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; grand-daughter, Sharon E. Flanagan; brothers, Harry and Norman Stout. Ruth is survived by 4 daughters; Mary (Douglas) Flanagan of Iowa City, IA; RuthAnn (Steve) Miller of Eaton Rapids, MI; Catherine (William) Nicol of Salem, MA, Debra Johnson of Houston, TX; son, Charles Johnson of Roseville, MI; and many wonderful friends of the VFW alumna. She has 4 grandchildren: Kenneth of North Port, FL, Brian and Gregory Flanagan of Iowa City, IA and Sarah Miller of Dundee, MI; 2 great-grandchildren: Hannah Ellen and Kaitlyn Olivia Flanagan of Northfield, IL. Funeral services were Tuesday June 10, 2014 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, MI. Memorial contributions supporting Ruth's passion for the love and education of children can be made to Small Blessings Child Care, First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids, Eaton Rapids, MI or VFW National Home Scholarship Fund, Eaton Rapids, MI.
