Ruth Elizabeth Casey, 94, passed away on Nov. 13, 2006, at the Larimer Hospice Care Center in Loveland. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and many of her great-grandchildren, as she left this world in peace. Ruth was born to Frances Mack Heck and John S. Heck during a blizzard in Pierce on Feb. 2, 1912. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from Pierce High School in 1929. She took part in the Nebraska Normal Training Course, which allowed her to teach grades one through eight in rural school. It was the Depression, and Ruth taught rural school in Pierce County for $50 per month, living with the Earnest Johnson family on their Pierce County farm. Lacking the funds to continue her college education, after three years of teaching, Ruth obtained a beautician's license. On Dec. 26, 1937, Ruth married John O. Casey in Pierce, moving to Norfolk in April of 1938. Ruth opened her own beauty shop on Norfolk Avenue, where she and her husband lived in the rear of the shop. With World War II consuming the world, John Casey left his then- pregnant wife to join the military in the U.S. Army. During the war, Ruth operated her beauty shop out of her home on North Ninth Street in Norfolk, also being joined by a new baby boy, John, and her sister, Marie, and her mother, Frances. Ruth's family grew with the birth of another son, Jim, and 18 months later, two identical twin daughters, Linda and Leanne. In the early 1950s, the Caseys moved to their own home on South Second St. in Norfolk, which would become her lifelong Norfolk home. Ruth continued her education, becoming certified to teach rural school, which she did in Hadar and District 37 south of Norfolk. In February 1966, Ruth's husband, John, passed away. She continued to support the family, including her mother, while attending Norfolk Junior College and earning a bachelor's of education degree in 1970 from Wayne State College. In the early 1960s, Ruth joined the staff at Norfolk Sacred Heart, where she taught grades two through eight. The students she taught at Sacred Heart became her passion and the beginning of lifelong friendships. Ruth retired from Sacred Heart Schools in 1978. She continued her work in the parish, heading up a fledgling CCD program for the Catholic public school students. In 1995, Ruth moved to Nashville, Tenn., to live with the family of her son, Jim. Ruth moved from Nashville to Loveland, Colo., in 2003 to be close to her daughters, Leanne and Linda. She was a resident of Good Samaritan Retirement Center in Loveland at the time of her death. Ruth will be remembered by many people in the Norfolk community as a dedicated teacher, a loyal friend, a loving mother and grandmother, a tireless caregiver and a faithful Christian. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Kinkade and husband, Kris, of Longmont, Colo., and Leanne Ruehle and husband, Bob, of Loveland; two sons, Dr. John Casey of Lincoln and Jim Casey of Lincoln; and niece, Patricia Norton Smith of Columbia, Mo. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Casey, nephew Michael Norton and sisters Marie Norton and Celestine Manning. The Rev. Anthony Weidner will officiate.
