Description	:	Ruth Elizabeth Swanstrom, 86, of Ottumwa went to be with her Lord at 11:50 a.m. December 21, 2019 at Prairie Hills in Ottumwa. Ruth was born March 23, 1933 to Roy and Margaret Emery Osterfoss of Hedrick, IA. Ruth was a graduate of Hedrick High School in 1951, where she was an outstanding member of the girls' basketball team. Read More	Ruth Elizabeth Swanstrom, 86, of Ottumwa went to be with her Lord at 11:50 a.m. December 21, 2019 at Prairie Hills in Ottumwa. Ruth was born March 23, 1933 to Roy and Margaret Emery Osterfoss of Hedrick, IA. Ruth was a graduate of Hedrick High School in 1951, where she was an outstanding member of the girls' basketball team. She attended Iowa State University. Ruth married Robert Swanstrom on April 10, 1952 at her parents' home south of Hedrick. To this marriage were born four boys. She and Robert farmed together in the Ottumwa and Hedrick area. She was a pilot and loved to fly her family in their Cessna 172 all over the U.S., Mexico and Canada. They divorced in 1973. Ruth then began her 27-year career as a Farm Bureau Insurance agent, where she had many customers who became lifelong friends. It was not uncommon for former clients share how happy they had been having her as their agent, which gave Ruth great pleasure. Ruth was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and had been active in many organizations, Elizabeth Ross DAR, Chapter G PEO, Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce, Ottumwa Ambassadors, Salvation Army board member, Sunnyslope Auxiliary, Ottumwa Life Underwriters, Quota, Bosom Buddies and Ottumwa Regional Health Center Auxiliary. Ruth was also very active in the Iowa/Missouri Flying Farmers, serving as the organization's queen in 1967 and then again in 2002. Ruth is survived by her sons, Jim of Ft. Collins, CO, Ron (Bridget) of Ottumwa, Dr. Jay (Michelle) of Keota and Jon Roy of Ft. Collins, CO; grandchildren, Tesia, Josh and Eric (Kim) Swanstrom, Carissa (Will) Ortman, Alex (Heather) Swanstrom, Victoria (Justin) Rusch, Emily (Ethan) Nannenga, Elise and Joe Swanstrom; great-grandchildren, Selene, Riley and Stefan Swanstrom, Scarlett and Conrad Swanstrom, Silas Nannenga; her sister, Martha (Roger) Meier; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. A Celebration of her Life will be held Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Gloria Dovre officiating. Burial will be in McCormick Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa.
