CORNWELL (Died May 21, 2011) Ruth E. Cornwell, 103, of Bayard, Nebraska, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Levander Funeral Home in Albion with Rev. K. F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Albion. Ruth Ella Cornwell, the daughter of Robert E. and Lena (Young) Sebastian was born on March 5, 1908 in Grayson County at Volney, Virginia. At the age of around 5 years old she moved with her family to Madison County, Nebraska where they lived for a few years and she began her education. They moved to Boone County near Cedar Rapids where Ruth continued her education, graduating from Cedar Rapids High School in 1924. Ruth was united in marriage to Fred Cornwell on October 10, 1928 in Cedar Rapids. They lived most of their married lives farming in the Cedar Rapids area except for several months during 1939 when they lived in Pennsylvania. She taught for one year before being a full time mother and housewife. Ruth owned and operated the Tasty Creme ice cream store in Cedar Rapids for several years. She was a member of the Cedar Rapids Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. In 1994 Ruth entered the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard, Nebraska. It was there where she died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the age of 103. Surviving Ruth is one daughter Shirley A. Duncan and husband Howard of Scottsbluff, NE; one son Howard A. Cornwell and wife Diane of Orange, TX; 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred, 2 brothers Fred Sebastian and R.G (Greek) Sebastian, along with 2 infant children.
