Ruth “Tutter” was born April 28, 1928, in Childress, TX, the 13th of 15 children to Horace T. and Bessie May Williams Cain. Horace and a few of Ruth’s older brothers homesteaded in Montana. Ruth “Tutter” was born April 28, 1928, in Childress, TX, the 13th of 15 children to Horace T. and Bessie May Williams Cain. Horace and a few of Ruth’s older brothers homesteaded in Montana. They then went back to Texas to bring the remainder of the family to their new homestead in Montana on the Pumpkin Creek south of Volborg, MT. Ruth grew up on this ranch attending the Loesch School, which was a couple miles from the homestead. She later attended school in Broadus. Her early years with her brothers and sisters were fun times, consisting of playing games, carving names in the sandstone banks, and going to the isinglass hills. She then attended high school in Miles City, graduating from Custer County High School. On March 1, 1948, Ruth married W.W. (Bud) Jones and they had four children; John, Janet, Juanita (Nita) and Jim. They worked on several ranches in the area before buying a place in the Yellowstone Valley in July of 1959. Ruth and Bud later divorced. She was remarried in 1969, to Claude Hagan. She worked at Montgomery Ward, First Security Bank, First Citizens Bank and First Interstate Bank, before retiring in 1984. Ruth traveled on the local wagon trains, the 1989 cattle drive from Roundup to Billings, MT, and the Big Drive of 1995, where she was able to watch the steers leave Fort Worth, TX on their drive to Miles City, MT. She was involved with the State Lands, cooking for forest fire fighters for 10 years. She was a kitchen helper for the Freeman Standoff in Jordan, MT for 43 days. She was a past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Range Riders Reps, and was a member of the Eagles, VFW and Elks Auxiliaries. Survivors include Ruth’s children: John (Diane) Jones of Miles City, Janet Edmonds of Cheyenne, WY and Jim (Jean) Jones of Miles City, MT; grandchildren, Ty (Val) Jones, Stacey (Leal) Brimmer, Sydney (Adam) Dice, D.R. (Samantha Dunn) Edmonds, Cassandra (Wes) Staton, Sam (Nova) Collinson, Michael Perkins, Anna Jones and Emma Jones; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Carlee and Taw Jones, Kailey, Kinzie and Teegan Brimmer, Layla, Aidric, Grady and Lawson Dice, Hanson and Carver Staton, and Ember and “soon to be born” Collinson. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, in 1979, and a daughter, Juanita Collinson in 1992, her parents, and all of her siblings; Joe, Sal, Jesse, Myrt, Bullet, Mike, Fatso, Nanie, Short, Gertie, Buster, Tat, Onie and Edith. Ruth loved dancing, especially waltzing. She loved reminiscing about old times, and sharing her family history. Her Cain heritage was so important to her, as were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although small in stature, she lived life large. To honor her, dance a dance, remember back, and enjoy family. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 15, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Interment to follow at the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City, MT. In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be made to the Range Riders Museum or a charity of one’s choice. Ruth’s family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers at the Friendship Villa who took such wonderful care of her.
