Description	:	Ruth French Chapman died on Feb. 21, 2003, in Chula Vista, Calif. She was born Feb. 20, 1907 in Salem, Neb., daughter of Frank Elliott French and Alice Adelaide Moe. The French family moved to Lincoln in 1912. Ruth attended the University of Nebraska from 1924-1929. In 1997 she was honored as an outstanding educator by the University's Teachers' College, and in 2000 she was presented the University Alumni Achievement Award. Ruth taught in York for two years. She was born Feb. 20, 1907 in Salem, Neb., daughter of Frank Elliott French and Alice Adelaide Moe. The French family moved to Lincoln in 1912. Ruth attended the University of Nebraska from 1924-1929. In 1997 she was honored as an outstanding educator by the University's Teachers' College, and in 2000 she was presented the University Alumni Achievement Award. Ruth taught in York for two years. In 1938 she moved to California and married Carroll Wages, a former York resident. They had two sons, Kent and Brian. Ruth taught at Brentwood and Burbank schools in California. After a divorce, Ruth returned to York in 1948 where she managed Chapman's, a ladies clothing store, for Bill Chapman and his sister, Dix. In 1951 she was elected to the York School Board. She returned to California in 1956 to teach. Bill Chapman and Ruth were married the following year. Ruth established the first library at the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She received a PTA Honorary Life Membership Award. Ruth retired in 1972. She served on the Sweetwater Union High School District Board for 25 years. In 1994 she was honored with the opening of the Ruth French Chapman Center for the Performing Arts in Chula Vista. Ruth was hospitalized in January 2003 following an automobile accident and died in Sharps Medical Center, Chula Vista. She is survived by her sons and a granddaughter Emily.
