Fay Mariott. She passed away last Tuesday Aug. 31, at a hospital at Salinas, Calif., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident the previous day. Interment was made at Sidney. Ruth Henrietta Barnes was born October 24, 1918 at Sidney. She received her education in the Sidney schools, graduating with the class of 1936. For several years she followed the teaching profession in the rural schools of Iowa. She became a member of the Sidney Methodist church at the age of 12, retaining her membership until the time of her passing. She spent her entire life in this community, with the exception of two years when she resided in Montana and California. Only recently she returned to California where she shared the home of a friend, the former Marian Gore of Carmel. She is survived by her parents, a brother, A. D. Barnes, her grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. George Goodin, all of Sidney, together with numerous other relatives and friends. Casket bearers were Robert Birkby, Gerald Tritsch, John Orton, Max Pullman, Lowell Goodin and Lee Reed. Music at the services was in charge of Mrs. J. R. Ettleman and Mrs. Lee Reed was in charge of flowers. An account of the fatal accident, as published in a California newspaper, says, in part: "Miss Ruth Henrietta Barnes, 26, of Carmel, died a short time after the tragic crash and Miss Marian Elyea, 26, also of Carmel, and Alvin Leonard McNew, 35, Salinas, drivers of the two cars involved, are under hospital care. "The two Carmel women were en route to Santa Cruz it was reported by Coroner J. A. Cornett, when Miss Elyea pulled out to pass another machine. At the moment McNew, who was driving toward Castroville on the wrong side of the highway, cut back into his proper traffic lane. The head on crash followed." Word has also been received that the condition of Marian Elyea was improving, she was eating better and that her general condition was good.
