She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on August 14, 2020 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo at the age of 104. A woman of extraordinary strength and ability, her list of accomplishments were many: a published author of the novel "Hats" and a cookbook, teacher, artist, choir director, gardener, seamstress, quilter, traveler, exceptional cook, card player and the best mother ever. She was born February 1, 1916 in Webster, South Dakota. Her parents, Edward and Jennie (Anderson) Reckmo, were immigrants from Norway and Sweden. She grew up and attended school in Holmquist, South Dakota and graduated from high school during the depression. She wanted to go to beauty school but money was scarce. Her father had borrowed the money for her to get her certification. She eventually bought her own business called Ruthie's Beauty Shop in Waubay, South Dakota. Ruth bought and paid cash for a new Model T with money she saved (even though she didn't yet know how to drive!) She met her future husband, Earl Redlin, in Waubay, where he was a teacher. They were united in marriage on May 30, 1941 in Webster, SD. When World War II hit, Earl was gone for three years in Italy. During this time, she continued to work day and night in her beauty shop while caring for her son John and her nephew David. They moved to Ellendale, ND in 1947. They had four children - John, Carol, James, and Barbara. In 1959, after the death of Earl's brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Ruby Redlin, Earl and Ruth lovingly took in their three children - Gene, Steven, and Susan, and raised them as their own. That just added more love to the family and another leaf in the kitchen table. Ruth's home was always filled with music, laughter, love and a lot of loud voices. She loved company and everyone was welcome in her home. You would most likely be greeted with "Have you had anything to eat?" Her favorite holidays were Christmas and Easter. She would always serve a beautiful formal dinner for 30+ people. The family sing-a-long on Christmas Eve was a highlight for all. Every day in the summer you could find her at Pheasant Lake, a place she loved dearly. The 4th of July at the lake was always a special family gathering. After her last child started school, Ruth decided to enter college because she always had a thirst for knowledge and thought it sounded like fun. After four years, she had degrees in Music, Art, and English Writing. Ruth directed the cherub and junior choirs at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale for many years. She taught choral music in Ellendale High School for a year and then in Forbes, ND for many years. She also directed the choir at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Forbes. She loved that choir and had great affection for the Forbes community. Ruth directed choirs into her 90s including the Guelph Singinaires. She was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary. Her greatest love on earth was her family - her beloved husband Earl, her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. Ruth and Earl were married for 71 years. She adored Earl and participated with him in his political career. For years when Ruth was in her 90s, she would walk a mile to be with Earl every day who was in the nursing home. She lived in her own home until the age of 97. Ruth then entered the Good Samaritan Center in Oakes, ND, where she was lovingly cared for by the most dedicated and compassionate staff there is. In later years, Ruth wrote about growing old. These are her words; "Growing old has never bothered me. I've never given it too much thought. What is growing old? You're growing older from the day you were born. If you aren't growing older, you're not here. It's as simple as that. Sure, we have a little more upkeep as we age and we have to adjust to change. We gain a little weight, so we diet or buy new clothes. We lose our hearing, so we invest in hearing aids. Lose our hair? - Buy a wig. We may lose our teeth. There's constant repair even for those called "young". We may have a few more aches in unknown areas and sometimes we can't remember where we left something we put away so we'd remember where we put it. Our eyes dim a bit, and our arms aren't long enough for crossword puzzles in bed, so we have to get glasses. But we still keep on going. Why quit? Are we "old"? Or "older"? Would "aging" sound better? or "maturing"? When do you arrive at "old"? Somehow I feel sorry for the youngsters who regard people as old. They're too young to have knowledge of the ability of age. It isn't the years a person lives; it's what you do with what you've got when you've got it." She was preceded in death by her husband, son John, her parents and three sisters. A private family funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes, ND with Reverend Paul Preus officiating. She will be buried between her husband Earl and son John at the Ellendale City Cemetery, Ellendale, ND. Ruth's funeral will be live streamed for the public on her obituary page.
