(Shoemaker) Black, was born August 16, 1911, near Fairmont and passed away August 12, 2007 at her home in Fairmont at the age of 95 years, 11 months and 26 days. (Shoemaker) Black, was born August 16, 1911, near Fairmont and passed away August 12, 2007 at her home in Fairmont at the age of 95 years, 11 months and 26 days. She attended rural school District 28 and graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1929. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Hastings College in 1933 where she belonged to Sigma Tau Sigma and Pi Gamma Mu, National Honorary Social Science Fraternity. In 1952, she was awarded a master of arts degree from the University of Nebraska. There she joined Pi Lambda Theta, an honorary education society. Ruth taught in school District 28, Fillmore county, Talmage High School, Chester-Hubbell Schools, where she was superintendent and Fairbury Junior College where she was head of the Education Department and taught history. She joined the Presbyterian Church in Fairmont in 1922 and continued membership in the Fairmont Community Church. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary teacher society; a life member of NEA and had belonged to state and local education organizations. She belonged to Goldenrod Kensington, Excelsior Extension Club, Sunshine Circle of the church, Fairview Manor Auxiliary and the Fairmont Senior Citizens. Following her retirement from teaching, she became interested in the Fillmore County Historical Society and was the curator of the museum at Fairmont for many years. She was proud of the fact that the Nebraska Farm Family Awards from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben were received for both the Black homestead (1871) and the Shoemaker Farm (1878). She received the Nebraska at Heart Award in 1989 from the NCIP at Fairmont and the Distinguished Former Faculty Award in 1990 from Southeast Community College for her contribution to education at Fairbury Junior College. Ruth is survived by cousins and by many former students and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont on August 17, with the Rev. Dr. Raponzil Drake officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied the Fairmont Community Church Choir who sang, "How Great Thou Art," "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace." Casket bearers were Howard Lefler, Joe Koca, Richard Koca, Federal Bridgman, Robert Trauger, Dave Moore and Doug Rung. Honorary bearers were Dr. Charles Ashby and Melvin Ackerman.
