A memorial service and burial of cremains will be in the summer. Ruth was born on November 30, 1919, in New Providence, the daughter of Reuel and Eva (Gibleon) Garrett. Ruth and her siblings, John, Dean, and Cuma grew up on farms in Hardin and Grundy Counties. A 1937 graduate of Whitten High School, Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Paul Callaway, on August 18, 1937, at the Friends church in New Providence. They raised their four children, Kay, Shirley, Judy, and David, on farms in Grundy, Hardin, Tama, Poweshiek and Marshall Counties, settling down during the last half of their lives on the farm near Whitten where Paul was born. With all the moves, Ruth found a stable center for her life in the small churches she loved and supported. She served as pianist, organist, Sunday school teacher, board member, deaconess, fundraiser, cook, and was a member of many women’s groups. She was a member of the Whitten Christian Church longer than any other. Her latest love was First Christian Church of Ames where she was a member for the past 18 years. Ruth also belonged to the Hearthstone Club of Whitten, Eastern Star of Eldora, Farm Bureau, and Benson Cemetery Society. Her family and friends remember her for her love of music, optimistic outlook on life, her gracious hospitality, her willingness to dig in and get the job done, her outstanding cooking which was the inspiration for the “Callaway Cooks’ Recipe Book,” compiled by her daughters. Her ready smile brought a ray of sunshine to any room and was quick to appear. She loved to sew, providing much of the family’s wardrobe, including doll clothes, when her children were young. She mastered quilting, crocheting, tatting, knitting, macramé, needlepoint and embroidery. She was a gardener, raising and canning food for the family when fresh vegetables weren’t available, and providing beautiful flowers for the table. She could butcher, render, churn, plow, disc, bale, haul, sort, mow, rake, and shovel, a true Iowa farm woman. She is survived by her children, Kay (Marvin) Scott, of Ames, Shirley Gardner, of Des Moines, Judith Callaway, of Mastic Beach, NY, and David (Kathy) Callaway, of Anchorage, Alaska; six grandchildren, Paul Scott, John Scott, Jeff Gardner, Jim Gardner, Cale Callaway and Stacey Callaway-Hannigan; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Maxine Garrett, of Marshalltown, and Ardis Garrett, of St. Cloud, Minn.; and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul on November 22, 1998, and all of her siblings.
