She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dale Robert Thornton; her parents; and brother, Wilbert Jr. She is survived by her children, John (Kim), Tom (Stan), Jane (Todd), and Julie (Lisa); grandchildren, Andrew (Nicky), Brian (Megan), Emma and Abigail; great-grandchildren, Avery, Elliot and Aiden; and her sister, Helen (Jim) Granzow. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20, 2018, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames. Memorials may be made in her name to Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 East Alameda Ave., Denver, CO, 80246. Ruth was a graduate of Hubbard High School, and worked at Iowa State University for many decades, which made her a loyal Cyclone fan. She was very musical and served as the church organist for years. She and Dale lived in Ames for much of their life and enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with family and friends. After Dale passed away in 2005, Ruth moved to Denver, Colo., to spend more time with her daughters and their families.
