Ruth Fisher, age 94, of Aplington, Iowa, was born September 11, 1914, the daughter of Charles Edward and Esther Nordmark Harper on a farm near Randolph, Kansas. She received her education at Lone Oak Country School and graduated valedictorian from Randolph High School in 1932. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls from 1934 to 1936. She obtained her BA in Elementary Education from UNI in 1965. Ruth taught elementary school for two years in Van Cleve, Iowa, and eight years in Marshalltown, Iowa. Ruth taught elementary school in Parkersburg for five years and in Ackley-Geneva for 16 years until she retired in 1982. Her total teaching career was 31 years. Ruth married Rogert Amendt in 1941 in Haverhill, Iowa. Rogert died in 1942. Rogert Edward Amendt II was born November 22, 1942. On July 12, 1944, Ruth was united in marriage with Christian Monroe Fisher at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed near Lawler, Iowa until 1951 when they moved to Aplington, Iowa and owned and operated the Fisher Lime Company until 1980. Chris and Ruth were married 55 years. Chris preceded her in death on October 4, 1999. Ruth was a caring, loving teacher who took pride in having all of her 11 grandchildren receive college degrees. Ruth was an active 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington throughout her life. She served as an Elder, a Trustee, Sunday school teacher and belonged to the morning circle and regularly attended Bible Study held at Maple Manor. Some of Ruth's community activities included being an active member of the Aplington Women's Club for over 50 years. She helped organize the Red Cross bi-annual donor day blood drives for many years. She served on the Aplington Public Library Board and was an avid library supporter and reader. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Amvet Auxiliary. She was a member of the Get Off Your Rocker exercise group. Ruth loved caring for and spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, knitting, writing and painting. She enjoyed the company and friendship of her Get Off Your Rocker exercise group. Her family was the most important aspect of her life and she truly loved the moments and holidays they spent together. Ruth was a devoted advocate for children and adults with special needs. Ruth died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Christian, two sisters, Dorothy Osbourn, and Melverna Mosburg, and three brothers, James, Eldred and William Harper. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Christie (Kenneth) Nevenhoven, Davenport, Iowa and Kathleen Fisher, Allison, Iowa; three sons, Rogert Amendt II, Fayette, Iowa; David (Barbara) Fisher, Hastings, Nebraska and Jon (Barbara) Fisher, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Chris (Cindy) Nevenhoven, Jon Nevenhoven, Nicole (Brett) Menard, Kathleen (Jason) Borgmann, Paul (Sara) Fisher, Lucas and Blake Fisher, Sara (Ed) Husarik, Heather Allan, Elizabeth Allan and James (Mary Ann) Allan and 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Peg Hager, LaPorte City, Iowa, Colleen Fisher, Temperence, Michigan and Charlotte Fisher, Benicia, California. Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Aplington Public Library, Cedar Valley Hospice or the First Presbyterian Church. Read less
