Ruth Martha Emma Espe was born on February 3, 1924 at her parents’ home near Buckeye, Iowa. She was one of eight children born to Hans and Anna (Fuhrman) Schulz. Ruth was baptized on April 13, 1924 and confirmed on April 10, 1938 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Buckeye. She attended country school. On October 10, 1948, Ruth was united in marriage to Carroll Espe at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Buckeye, Iowa. She and Carroll settled near Garden City and farmed the Espe family farm. Her passions in life were her church, her family and cooking. She will always be remembered for her holiday goodie baskets. She was a long-time active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of Mission Circle. She enjoyed making quilts with her Mission Circle friends. Ruth passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her three children, Karla and her husband Dennis Neubauer of Garden City, Iowa, Rick and his wife Jayne of Olathe, Kansas, and Lori and her husband Al Hill of Radcliffe, Iowa; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother Vic Schulz of Nevada, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Emma Severson and Esther Lee, infant brother Albert along with brothers Fritz, Arnie and Paul, and her husband Carroll.
