Description	:	Ruth Mary Rogness August 26, 1918 - November 15, 2007 Ruth Mary Letsche was born August 26, 1918 in Remsen, Iowa to Martin and Frieda (Schmidt) Letsche. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. Ruth later graduated from Remsen High School at age 16 and attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. Ruth was married to Ruben Rogness of Ossian, Iowa on August 10, 1940 in Marcus, Iowa. Ruth taught in the Iowa school system for 29 years in Royal, Iowa. She was nominated for teacher of the year. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. Ruth later graduated from Remsen High School at age 16 and attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. Ruth was married to Ruben Rogness of Ossian, Iowa on August 10, 1940 in Marcus, Iowa. Ruth taught in the Iowa school system for 29 years in Royal, Iowa. She was nominated for teacher of the year. Following her retirement in 1979, Ruth spent her time in various volunteer pursuits as well as visiting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in England and Alaska. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Ruth passed away on November 15, 2007 at Dove House Hospice in Westminster, Maryland at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 20 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben; her parents; two sisters: Emma and Faye and four brothers: Roland, Paul, Roy and Harold. Left to cherish her memory are her one son, Daniel and his wife, Kati of Anchorage, AK; her two daughters: Joan Graen and her husband, Noel of Finksburg, MD and Joyce Brawner and her husband, Harold of Anchorage, AK; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at the Bethlehem Luheran Church, Royal, Iowa with Rev. Deb Mechler officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Dan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kati Rogness; son, Paul Rogness (Juleen); daughter, Jennifer Schmitz (John); and grandchildren, Bryson (20), Hunter (16), Holly (9), and Colby (6) all of Anchorage. He also leaves two sisters, Joyce Brawner (Harold) of Anchorage, Alaska, and their son Nick (who was like a son to Dan), and Joan Graen (Noel) of Maryland. Dan was born in Cushing, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa, with a degree in civil engineering. His first job was with the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in South Dakota. He was with the PHS for 25 years. Dan and Kati retired young so they could enjoy time together traveling, being with friends and family, and going to hockey games! Dan met Catherine Jane Aiello (Kati) on a blind date in 1962. They were married September 1, 1963, in Oelwein, Iowa. After living in South Dakota, they followed Dan's life-long dream of living in Alaska. They immediately knew they were home. Jennifer was born in July of 1969 and Paul in January of 1974. Dan loved what Alaska had to offer and made sure his family enjoyed it all. He built a cabin on the Deshka River, one of his very favorite places. They also have a lake cabin where many incredible memories were made. Dan's biggest joy was spending time with family. He was thrilled when their son Paul moved back to Alaska. The past four years were full of family dinners, time with grandkids, and extra-long cabin weekends. They also had a tradition of spending Christmas on Maui, a place he loved to relax and enjoy time with loved ones. Dan was deeply involved in hockey for the majority of his life. He not only enjoyed watching the game, but was passionate about developing and supporting youth hockey. He served on numerous boards and was an off-ice official for UAA, ACES, and High School Hockey. While he loved to watch any hockey game, his favorites were when Paul or one of his grandchildren was playing. He got a great kick out of announcing games that his grandsons were playing in. Dan led an extremely full life. He loved being outside, a good campfire, doing projects, watching his grandkids play, going out to lunch, watching the Food Network, cooking dinner for Kati, a good bottle of scotch and a nice glass of wine. A celebration of life is scheduled for Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 4 p.m. at St. John United Methodist Church, 1801 O'Malley Road. A reception will follow at the church.
