Ruth was born Dec. 5, 1902, on the family farm of Karl Godfrey and Clara Catherine Kolb Schmickle near Alburnett, Iowa. She received her BA from the University of Northern Iowa in 1925 and did post-graduate work at the University of Iowa in 1928. She taught English and served as librarian in the public schools in Cherokee, Iowa, from 1925 to 1927, Northwood, Iowa, 1928 to 1929, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1929 to 1932. Ruth married Harold B. McTavish Mary 28, 1932, and raised her three children in Cedar Rapids. She was director of the health service library at St. Luke's Methodist Hospital in Cedar Rapids from 1960 to 1969 and organizer and director of the Mercy Hospital Library from 1969 to 1975, a member of the Iowa Regional Medical Program Advisory Committee on Libraries from 1970 to 1972, the Medical Library Association and the Iowa Library Association. Ruth is listed in Who's Who of American women (1974-75). She was a long-time member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids and the Order of Eastern Star. Ruth enjoyed writing poetry and published a collection of her poems as she battled the progressive physical effects of Parkinson's disease. Her family and many friends will greatly miss her.
