Seaman Saint entered the navy March 13, 1944, received his boot training at Farragut, Idaho, and went to California on active duty in May. He was a machinist at at the John Deere Tractor Co., in Waterloo before enlistment. Born at Liscomb, Iowa, August 23, 1918, he married Miss Helen Higer, Eldora, March 4, 1939. They were divorced in February, 1944. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Saint, 1813 Lafayette St., Waterloo; his former wife and two daughters, Phyllis Jean, 4, and .Marilyn Kay, ten months old, who reside with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Lewis of Eldora; five brothers, Lyle and Leland of Waterloo; Charles of Elgin, Ill., Pvt. Erwin of Camp How??, Tex. and sisters Mrs. Julian Foltz and Mrs. Oscar Jeske, at New Providence. Whitten and Community War Service Record Gold Star Boys Woodrow W. Seaman Saint was stationed in Portland, Oregon and was expecting to be sent out on sea duty at any time when his parents received word that he was killed in an explosion of two ammunition ships at Port Chicago, California in July 17, 1944. 1944 Port Chicago Explosion On July 17, 1944, two transport ships carrying ammunition exploded at Port Chicago killing 320 men and injuring 390 in what was the worst domestic loss of life in World War.
