Chadsey on Thursday morning, April 16th, 1931, at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Chadsey had not been feeling well for some time past but there was no evidence of the approaching end, as she was out auto riding on Wednesday, going to Pittsburg, and seemingly enjoying the trip very much. Early Thursday morning she complained of not feeling well and the doctor was called but she had passed on almost before he got there. Her son, W.L. Chadsey, who is employed by the H.D. Lee Company, had spent the night in Miami, but was phoned and arrived home in a short time arriving about 5:30. Our wife rushed across the alley too late to be of help. We can't remember when we didn't know Mrs. Chadsey and she was a second mother to us. Her son, Fred and myself were about the same age and we were together from childhood school days. In our boyhood days we lived in the same neighborhood and since we have been married have lived across the alley and there has been a path well worn between the houses. We have always loved and respected her and only last Saturday she had us over to her house on account of it being our wedding anniversary. She was a remarkable woman in a number of ways. She read the newspapers diligently and listened to all the leading events as given over the radio and could talk with authority on almost any subject -- she kept her mind young, and it was a delight to converse with her. She always remembered our wife with little tokens of esteem when she went visiting and came back home. In fact we seemed like part of the family, and no one outside her immediate family will miss her more. We felt like one of her very best friends and we think we were. We can remember many pleasing things and not one thing to mar her memory. She took a great interest in everything which went on in Cherokee and, although in late years she spent much time away from here, she kept in close touch with everything. She belonged to the Methodist church and the Eastern Star lodge and to most of the clubs in town. No matter what you were discussing that related to any phase of activity that would be of interest to the town -- church, school or social, she would immediately make some suggestion to help. As a boy and as a man we have known her, loved her, and respected her intelligence. She was well traveled and could give nice accounts of places seen without putting any notion of bragging into the conversation. An ideal woman for the town and the whole community. Mrs. Chadsey was born September 29th, 1850, in Guyandotte, West Virginia, coming to Kansas in the early days with her parents and settling on a claim near Monmouth. She was married to A.N. Chadsey September 28th, 1868. They ran a store in Monmouth but when the railroad was built into Cherokee they moved to here and went into partnership with Joe Lucas and established the first business house in town. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Ida C. Dorsey of Chicago; Mrs. Florence Hare and Miss Mildred Chadsey both of Cleveland; one son, William Lloyd Chadsey of this city; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the home on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Roy Sturgell in charge.
