Description	:	Salina Penner, 97, of Freeman passed away on Tuesday at the Centerville Care and Rehab Center. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday Jan. 17th at 10:30 am at the Salem Mennonite (South) Church of rural Freeman. Visitation will begin at 4 pm on Friday with the family present from 5-7 pm at the Walter Funeral Home in Freeman. Salina (Waltner) Penner was born March 16, 1917 to Ben J. and Emma (Miller) Waltner on the family farm, south of Marion, SD, where she grew up. She passed away January 13, 2015 at the age of 97. In her younger years, Salina attended country school District 38 in Spring Valley Township and Freeman Academy which she graduated from in 1935. She also attended Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas for two years and Moody Bible Institute of Chicago for two years. On September 25, 1932 she was baptized by Rev. P. R. Schroeder and became a member of Salem Mennonite Church of rural Freeman. She was active in the Women’s Mission Society, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years, until her eyesight began to fail her. On April 14, 1944 Salina married Daniel E. Penner of Luton, Iowa. To this union five children were born. One daughter and four sons. The couple started farming in Iowa and in February 1946 they moved to a farm south of Marion. She and her husband farmed until his death on December 5, 1990. Two weeks later, she moved into an apartment in Freeman. Salina is survived by one daughter, Betty (Richard) Poppinga of Davis, SD; four sons, Wayne (Suzanne) Penner of Floral City, FL, Elroy Gene Penner of Aurora, CO, Lyle (Susan) Penner of Parker, CO and Don Penner of Prairieville, LA; eight grandchildren, Michael (Janee) Poppinga, Jeffrey (Lori) Poppinga, Karen (Kevin) McHenry, Kristal (Jason) Drenth, Manda (Scott) Wright, Sarah (Jason) Fincham, Laura (Michael) Johnson and Tessa (Daniel) Colburn; 29 great grand children; one brother, Marvin (Pearl) Waltner of Freeman, SD; one brother-in-law, six sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Erland Waltner and his wife Winifred Waltner.
