Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Sally was born to Gilbert and Katherine (Hosch) Recker on July 13, 1944, in Monticello, Iowa. She graduated from Sacred Heart School in Monticello, where she played on the varsity basketball team. She was married to Bill Birmingham on Oct. 19, 1974, in Cedar Rapids, where she and Bill made their home. Sally's survivors include her husband, Bill; her stepson, Dan Birmingham and his wife Shelley, and granddaughters, Jennifer and Samantha of Johnston, Iowa; granddaughter, Brittany Barry of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Lynn (Bob) Rollinger of Sand Springs, and Beth (Pat) Paul of Robins; two brothers, Jack (Pam) Recker of Sand Springs, and Dan (Margie) Recker of Manchester; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends. The family wishes to thank Above and Beyond Hospice Care of Monticello for their comforting care. Memorials may be made to the Cedar Valley Humane Society or Above and Beyond Hospice Care. What a wonderful world it was with Sally in it. Did she live life her way? Oh yes, and we loved her for it. Sally dealt with health problems for a long time. What a battle, but our Sally suited up, armored herself with courage and marched on with hope and determination -- not a surprise for those of us who loved her and knew her well. She showed us what a real fighter was. Her strength and acceptance were beyond our understanding. Complaining was not an option. One of Sally's many passions was cooking. The kitchen was her domain and she was always on a new recipe hunt. She loved entertaining and did it with flair. What a great hostess she was and dinner was never rushed. There was always a household of pets. Sally adored her pets and yours too. She adopted her friends' pets when they were orphaned due to their master's death. They came, bad habits and all, but she ignored that and kept one hand on the carpet cleaner. Sally had countless friends and family. She would be the first at your door to lend comfort, help and food in times of need. She had endless energy. Sally, being very social, enjoyed her clientele at Cooper's Mill, where she worked in the lounge for nearly 20 years. They were extended family. She didn't miss work often, even while on chemo. She showed up for work ready to debate politics, laugh, joke, listen and keep order. Service was even better if you agreed with her politically -- "Hillary for President." Sally was a well-seasoned shopper and retail stores will sorely miss her. The end result was a bulging closet with style, interest and class. There was also a great collection of Black and Gold as she was an avid Hawkeye fan. We celebrate her life and the gift she was to us. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me The crown of righteousness, Which the Lord, the righteous Judge, Will award to me on that day And not only me, but also to all Who have longed for His appearance."
