She was the daughter of John McVay and Elizabeth (Waln) McVay. Obituary: "Samantha Adeline McVay was born in Marion County, Iowa, November 17, 1850. On February 9, 1869, she was united in marriage to Benjamin Beard in Marion County, Iowa. In 1887 they came to Chase County, Nebraska, where they have resided on a farm in Bussell precinct, until her death, which occurred Thursday, December 12, 1918. She leaves to survive her husband, Benjamin F. Beard, and eleven children: Verastus E. Beard, Champion; Laura Maranville, Lamar; Albert E. Beard, at home; Mary A Davison, Champion; James A. Beard, Arco, Idaho; Sarah A. Blue, Denver; Daisy E. Beard, at home; Otho B. Beard, Lamar; Della D. Eitel, Champion; Mecia V. Hatheway, Rozet, Wyoming; Celia M. Davison, Rozet, Wyoming; and a brother, Mr. J.J. McVay, Bashford, Missouri. Mrs. Beard has long been recognized among her large host of friends in Bussell precinct and throughout the west part of the county, as a lady of Christian character, and her cheerful, beautiful and helpful life and her devotion as wife and mother will ever linger as a fragrant memory in the minds of surviving relatives and those with whom she came in contact through her journey of life. To the sorrowing relatives and friends we might add that though she is gone from you that her record is made and will remain with you a lasting treasure. The funeral services were held at the beautiful Beard home Monday, conducted by Rev. Harold H. Miles of the Imperial M.E. church, who paid a fitting tribute to the beautiful life of the deceased, and spoke words of comfort to those who are left on this vale of tears. The interment was made in Green Lawn Cemetery, south of Lamar. All of the children were present at the funeral but James Beard, of Arco, Idaho; and Mrs. Mecia B. Hatheway, of Rozet, Wyoming." (Note: The following poem was written by Samantha's family members after her death. It was found in the belongings of Samantha's daughter, Della B. Eitel. Both obituary and poem were published in a Nebraska paper (no name or date given on them).
