J. Haines, who has been in poor health for several years and un- able to leave her home for the past year died last Friday evening at her home here. She has been confined to her bed for several months and her death came as a relief to her suffering. In the death of Mrs. Haines all connections with a name that has been familiar and synonymous with Altoona almost from the start has been removed from Altoona's scroll. Mr. Haines was one of the first set- tlers of Altoona and he was connected with business and other enterprises here until his death twenty-four years ago. Mrs. Haines maintained the Haines home here until a few years ago when she disposed of it to Dr. Carpenter and moved to a smaller home. Mrs. Samantha Haines, daughter of Henry and Samantha Ackey was born October 15, 1847 in Malvern, Ohio and passed away at her home in Altoona, Iowa Friday evening December 2, 1932 aged 85 years, 1 month and 17 days. Her girlhood and young womanhood was spent in Malvern, Ohio. October 10, 1899 she was united in marriage to Thomas E. Haines and came to Al- toona, Iowa where she has resided ever since. Mr. Haines departed this life May 9, 1908. She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Cheney, of Belgrade, Montana who has been with her and helped care for her the past two and one half months. She leaves also one nephew, Nealey Ackey, of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of friends. In the atmosphere of a religious home she gave herself to Him "whom not having seen yet loved" early in life. On coming to Altoona, she immedi- ately identified herself with the Church of Christ where she became an active worker in all the different de- partments of the church being leader of the different societies many years, and being active as long as her health would permit. She was also a member of the Altoona O. E. S. Chapter and was active in that work for many years, being a charter mem- ber and the first Worthy Matron of the Altoona Chapter when it was organized in 1900. During her early life she was en- gaged in teaching school and later in caring for her invalid mother. Grad- ually under a complication of ailments her strength sank until her spirit took flight leaving a pleasant memory in the hearts of those who new her best. There is no death; although we grieve When beautiful familiar forms, That we have learned to love are torn From our embracing arms. They are not dead; they have but passed Beyond the mist that bind us here, Into the new and larger life Of that serener sphere. The funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ Sunday afternoon, December 4th at 2:30 o'clock by the pastor Rev. Chas. S. Macy, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. J. A. Dillinger, now state secre- tary of the Churches of Christ in Iowa. Music was furnished by a quartette composed of Misses Pauline Rieman and Florence Iseminger and Messrs Wilbur Yount and Watson Mason with Mrs. R. H. Burgett at the piano, Mrs. Clyde Yount of Sheffield was present and rendered a most beautiful solo "I am nearer Home". Following the service the body was laid to rest beside her husband in the Altoona Cemetery.
