Staunton Spectator June 25, 1861 Terrible Affray in Highland: We have been furnished the particulars of a fatal and bloody affray which occurred in the neighborhood of Doe Hill, in Highland county on Saturday, the 8th. It appears that a long-standing feud, originating in a land suit, had existed between George Siple and Sampson Jordan, both living near Doe Hill. Mr. Siple has been a strong secessionist, almost a monomaniac on that subject, and had inquired of two or three persons whether any thing could or would be done with a man who would kill a Unionist, or an abolitionist. On the day alluded to he and his son and his son-in-law, met with Jordan, who had been charged with being a Unionist or an abolitionist and who had voted the Union ticket. Siple had said before the election, that any man who would vote the Union ticket ought to be shot. Upon ascertaining that Jordan had voted the Union ticket, Siple, as before said, sought Jordan and after some words, shot him, the shot bringing him to the ground. He rose, however and as he was rising seized an axe, with which he struck Siple a terrible blow on one of his cheeks. The blow felled Siple and it was supposed that Jordan would have killed him, but Siple's son and son-in-law both shot Jordan, killing him almost instantly. They also cut him with a sword after he fell. Two of the parties to the killing of Jordan, Siple's son and son in-law, were immediately arrested and committed to jail, but were afterwards released. Old Mr. Siple was removed to his residence, and it was expected he would recover. Rockingham Register.
