Johnston Samuel Alexander Johnston was born in Crawfordsville, Ia., Feb. 19, 1851, and died at Denver, Colo., May 14, 1906, aged 55 years, 2 months and 26 days. Mr. Johnston moved with his parents in 1869 to Johnston County Mo., where he lived eight years, then came to Ringgold County, Iowa, and soon after to Clearfield. Here he lived until 1896, when he moved to Bedford. Last summer, for the sake of his health, he moved to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he made his home. The change of climate benefited him very much so that he was able to oversee and help in the construction of buildings. He was very much encouraged and we all hoped that he would in a good measure regain his health, but the improvement was for a short time only. He had been advised by physicians that an operation might benefit him. He went to Denver, where the operation was performed successfully, but his physical condition was not able to support life and he passed away. Mr. Johnston was married in 1874 to Martha Hawthorne. Five children were born to them, three of whom are living: Mrs. Frank A. Ferguson [Estella May], Des Moines, Edith and Harry. Mr. Johnston in 1872, under the ministry of Rev. J. F. Graham, made a confession of faith in Christ, and united with the United Presbyterian Church at Kingsville, Mo.; when he moved to Ringgold County he became connected with the Eugene United Presbyterian Church. In 1881 at the organization of the Christian United Presbyterian Church he was elected one of its first elders and served faithfully in that capacity for fifteen years. At Bedford he united with the Presbyterian Church, and was soon elected an elder and served until his removal to Colorado, where he and his family united with the Fort Morgan Presbyterian church. Mr. Johnston was not only a good churchman interested in the work of the Lord, but he was a true Christian. As a carpenter he was a skillful workman and conscientious and while able to work was much sought after. He had been quite a sufferer for some years, yet he bore his afflictions most patiently. He, like his Lord, was made perfect through suffering. Not only the dear wife, three children and four grandchildren, but an aged mother, three brothers and three sisters are sorrowing, but not as those who have no hope, for their dear one has been relieved from his labors and sufferings and has entered into his rest. The remains were brought to Clearfield Tuesday and funeral services were conducted at the home of J. F. Stewart Wednesday at 2 p. m. , by Rev. Barackman, of Bedford, assisted by Rev. Weingart.
