Allen News of the passing of Samuel A. Allen at his home here, came as a shock to his many friends and relatives throughout the county. Mr. Allen had been a patient in All Saints? Hospital for several days, but had returned home thirteen days before his passing. Mr. Allen was born May 19, 1872, son of Alfred and Hannah (Vickery) Allen at Allen Hill, where he lived all his early life. In his early 20?s he had the misfortune to have an eye irreparably damaged while employed at the copper mine at Cape D?or. He came to East Southampton and later purchased the farm owned by Mrs. Bateman. He was rural mail driver for East Southampton, South Brook, Mapleton and East Mapleton, later postmaster for this area as well, and will be remembered for his many kindnesses done through the years. His wife Agnes (MacLean) MacNeil, predeceased him several years ago. Mr. Allen was the last member of his family and had been predeceased by three sisters, Henrietta, Rebecca of Allen Hill and Sarah (Mrs. Anthony D. Lunn) of Advocate: and three brothers, James, Amasa, Allen Hill, and Imbert of Advocate. Several nephews, nieces and cousins survive. The funeral was held in Mapleton United Church on Thursday Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Harold W. Higgins, who based his remarks on Psalm 91, a favorite portion of scripture he often asked his pastor to read to him. The choir with members from Southampton and Mapleton choirs, and having Mrs Clair Winters, organist, sang the hymns ?In the Sweet Bye and Bye? and ?Shall We Gather at the River?, both favorites of Mr. Allen. The pallbearers were William J. Brown, Huxley Brown, Lorne J. Smith, George Gilroy, William B. Lavers, J. Edward Adams. Interment was in the Mapleton Cemetery. Funeral directors were Allison T. Smith, Ross Smith. The lovely floral tributes, cards and letter gave silent testimony to the respect and affection given Mr. Allen. Relatives and friends were present from Saint John, Amherst, Parrsboro, Allenville, Allen Hill, Apple River, as well as from surrounding communities.
