Read More	MOUNT AIRY, NC ~ Mr. Samuel Andrew Hennis Jr., 87, of 440 Fairway Lane, Mount Airy, husband of Myrtle "Sis" Foy Hennis, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hennis was born June 27, 1917, the son of Samuel Andrew and Ada Coble Hennis. He was a lifelong member and supporter of the First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, where he served on the board of deacons and had served as the chairman of the finance committee. Mr. Hennis was a founder and co-owner of Town Tire Service and of H.L. & S.A. Hennis Jr. Inc. He was a well-known businessman in this community for many years. Mr. Hennis served on the Mount Airy Board of Education for nine years, the Salvation Army Board of Directors, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the board of directors of Workmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association for 50 years and eventually served as chairman of the board until Workmen's merger with Southern National Bank in 1992. A dedicated mason until his death, he became a Mason in 1938 and served as Master of Granite Lodge No. 322 in Mount Airy in 1950, Grand Commander of the NC York Rite Bodies in 1963, Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina in 1965, was a 33rd degree Mason in the Winston-Salem Scottish Rite Bodies and was a member of the Royal Order of Scotland. Mr. Hennis also served on the board of the North Carolina Masonic Foundation and was a charter and current member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Mount Airy. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Myrtle "Sis" Foy Hennis of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law: Suzanne Foy Hennis of Mount Airy and Pamela and Donald H. Fallis of Wilmington; a son and a daughter-in-law, Samuel Andrew Hennis III and Connie Cole Hennis of Mount Airy; five grandchildren: Hope Hennis Bodine of Kaufman, Texas, Robert Miles Hennis of Plano, Texas, John Foy Moss of Chapel Hill and Steven Andrew Fallis and Katherine Hines Fallis, both of Wilmington; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hennis was preceded in death by a grandson, James Andrew Hennis; four sisters: Frances Hennis Johnson, Thelma Hennis Johnson, Verona Hennis Wall and Lillie Hennis Bondurant; and a brother, Hugh Linwood Hennis. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 9, at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert and the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. The Hennis family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030; to Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565; or to Masonic and Eastern Star Home, 700 S. Holden Road, Greensboro, NC 27407.
