His father died, leaving Samuel at the age of 12 to be raised by his mother and stepfather. He lived on the family farm until his marriage to Elizabeth Friesner in 1835. Samuel was a farmer most of his life, living in Greenfield Township until 1847 when he apparently moved to Liberty township to live on a piece of property owned by his father in law Henry. His father died, leaving Samuel at the age of 12 to be raised by his mother and stepfather. He lived on the family farm until his marriage to Elizabeth Friesner in 1835. Samuel was a farmer most of his life, living in Greenfield Township until 1847 when he apparently moved to Liberty township to live on a piece of property owned by his father in law Henry. This piece of property is located on the northwest corner of the present day intersection of State Rt. 158 and Pleasantville Rd. about three miles south of Baltimore, Ohio. They remained there until after Samuel's discharge from the Union Army. He had been mustered in as a private at the age of 49 on 24 Sept 1861 with Co. 1, 4th Ohio Volunteer Calvery at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He served three years fighting in Bowling Green, Ky. On 15 Feb 1862, Nashville, Tenn., on 8 Mar 1862, Huntsville, Al., on 11 April 1862, Bridgeport, Al., on 29 April 1862, Lexington, Ky. on 17 Oct 1862, Murfreesboro, TN., on 1-2 Jan 1863, in Lebanon, Tn., and on 8 Feb 1863 in Bradyville, TN., until 1 March 1863. This unit bore an honorable role in many battles after this. It would appear that Samuel was wounded in the Battle of Bradyville as he was discharged 18 Mar 1863 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In 1870, Samuel and his family appear in Dumontville where he would live until his death in 1890. His death was followed by his wife's death two weeks later.
