Description	:	Mr Samuel Battles died at his home in Jackson County Saturday morning, January 15, 1898. For nearly two years he had been suffering with Bright's disease but until a few days before his death his trouble was not thought to be of a serious nature. Everything possible was done for him, both in medical assistance and in tender care, but the desire to save him was unable to cope with the grim monster. Read More	Mr Samuel Battles died at his home in Jackson County Saturday morning, January 15, 1898. For nearly two years he had been suffering with Bright's disease but until a few days before his death his trouble was not thought to be of a serious nature. Everything possible was done for him, both in medical assistance and in tender care, but the desire to save him was unable to cope with the grim monster. During the day previous to his death, he was up part of the time. The funeral was held at the Goddard's church, Tuesday, at 12 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev Macurda, who preached an appropriate sermon. The church was filled to its utmost capacity and a long procession of sorrowing friends followed the remains to their last resting place in the city of the dead. Mr Battles was the son of Mr and Mrs Edward Battles and was born August 27, 1823 in Vermont. While he was yet young, the family came to Jackson County, Iowa and there December 23, 1846, he married Abigail Hunt, who died February 3, 1876. Nine children were born to them, all of whom are living, Ai and Able Battles of Jackson township, and Mrs Emma Cole, of Churdan, being the only residents of this county. He was married again June 4, 1877, to Laura Phillips and to them five children were born, all of whom with the wife are living. A home has been entered and its heart taken away but the sorrowing ones do not mourn without hope.
