Gibson Expires This Morning After a Long Illness.Postmortem Disclosed Cancer of the Stomach.Settled in Lincoln Township in Year 1852.Hudson, Mar. 7.--After lying close to death for the past two weeks with demise momentarily expected, Samuel B. Gibson expired at 8:45 this morning at his home in this city. For the past three years decedent had been an invalid. At first he was affected with dropsy, but was cured of that by Waterloo physicians. Afterward he was troubled with stomach complaint and a postmortem examination this morning disclosed a cancer in that organ.Mr. Gibson's sufferings were not great at the last except at spells, and his death was painless, similar to lapsing into healthy sleep.Decedent was one of the oldest settlers of Blackhawk county. Born in Ireland May 1, 1834, he migrated to this country in 1850, stopping, first at New York. He came to this section of the county in 1852. On January 31, 1861, he was married to Miss Mary Whaylen at her home midway between this place and Waterloo. Her folks settled on the farm there in 1854.Almost as soon as Mr. Gibson reached the county he took up a piece of ground in Lincoln township, three mile south of here. This he made his home until 1895 when he moved to Waterloo where he spent a year, at the end of which time he removed to Hudson and has been living here since.Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gibson, of whom six are living. They are Mrs. John Klinefelter, jr., of Waterloo; Mrss. Weebb Shank of this place, Mrs. R. A. High of Jesep , Mrs. W. T. Cummings on the old farm in Lincoln township, Samuel Gibson living near the old farm in Lincoln and Mrs. James Breese who also lives in that community. Charles, the youngest child, died ten years ago in his fifteenth year.The funeral will be held at the Brethren church at this place at 11 o'clock next Sunday forenoon. Rev. E. L. Hildebrand of Waterloo will officiate, assisted by Rev. W. A. Welty, the pastor of the church. The burial will be in the Hudson cemetery.All of the children have been by the bedside for the past two weeks doing what they could, with the bereaved wife, in making the last days of deceased cheerful. The invalid was very patient. For five weeks before his death he had not taken solid food, and the naturally strong and robust constitution lived on itself until the last bit of vitality was consumed.Deceased was a man who was highly thought of by all his neighbors and acquaintances, and his death will be universally mourned.The Waterloo Courier, 7 Mar 1902; Page 1
